If I am connecting a computer to an already existing network, what are the color assignments i need for the cat 5 wiring? This is just a regular network already set up I didnt set it up myself so I dont know, and I havent done a cable from scratch in a while. I think I might have found what I was looking for but if someone could confirm for me it would help out...

No one in class can get the software install to automatically load on the client pc. I'll try to sum it up the best I can. Have a class that we are working with Windows Server 2003. Have a Domain setup on our host pc. Have a second pc that is a client and can logon the domain. It can access the public folder that we setup. (We also put the test program Windows Defender MSI in there). We installed GPMC and are using Group Policy Manager (we also tried a similiar method in AD Users and Comps). So, we name our policy Push1 and we mapped it as \\server\folder\file.msi as per Microsoft's instructions (not browse). We double checked the members of/rights area and the clientxp (our test login name) has that. Both under the computer management and user management we tried setting up these GPO Software installs. Weird thing is that if we restart the server, it auto installs on there. I double checked and it shows it as comp/user management for our domain not the local pc Any ideas? Can add info

OK, I have recently had a new home built, and I had all rooms hard-wired with CAT5.

In my office I want to have more than one computer, but there is only one jack. I have learned that I need to use a "switch" to basically expand the office jack into multiple jacks.

Question: I have an old D-link wireless router.

Can I use this as a switch, and, as a side benefit, gain a WAP (wireless access point) on my network? I think what I would need to do is run an ethernet cable from my wall jack to a normal port on the back of the router (NOT the LAN jack), and then fan out from the remaining 3 ports to other computers in my office.

In addition, I think I need to turn off DHCP on the wireless router (my main router just downstream of my cable modem should be handling handing out IP addresses).

I think also I may need to change the subnet of the wireless router to match that of my main router downstream from my cable modem.

Is this all correct? Any other pointers?

Here's my bro's question: I have my Wii and PC connected via ethernet and i didn't use the wireless feature, i really don't know much about wireless networking but i prefer having them wired since they're just 2 feet away from each other, i hid the SSID or i think i didn't broadcast it, but didn't have time to do the WEP/WPA encryption and also i'm new at doing that, my question is DOES MY ROUTER STILL SENDS WIRELESS SIGNALS AND IF MY SSID IS HIDDEN/NOT BROADCASTED, BUT NOT ENCRYPTED DOES THAT MEAN I'M SAFE OR DO I STILL NEED TO ENCRYPT, i just want to have my wii and pc online at the same time and i really didn't need a wireless router but my wife had got a good deal for a router and it was wireless, I JUST FEEL UNSAFE WITH WIRELESS BEC. OF HACKERS AND PLUS I DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT COMPUTERS AND WIRELESS

I can connect to the wireless router alright, but there is still no Internet connection. I ran a diagnostic and it comes up with this:

*There may be a problem with the Domain Name Servers (DNS)

Windows attempted to find the well known host "www.microsoft.com" using DNS. The server responded that the name was unknown.*

Can anyone help me fix this problem? I can't find anything on the Internet. (Just to let you know I am using a separate computer to ask this question. I CANNOT connect to the Internet at ALL on the other computer running Vista).

I have DSL from AT&T and it runs at 768k. Not only on my computer, but all the computers in the house, the internet is going really really slow, the connection is horrible. I have tried repairing the connection, unplugging the modem, everything! I have a wireless connection if that makes any difference. I have always had the wifi and my internet has always been fast so it doesn't make any sense, and my connection is also secure. Whats wrong and how do I fix it?
Help!!!!

Im havng this stupid issue with my wireless network. I have one computer hooked up to the access point. and then i have 3 laptops and one desktop hooked up wirelessly. Im having this issue with one of them. it just started happened like 2 days ago. For some reason my internet browser wont work on one laptop and i cant figure out what is causing it.

It takes forever for the homepage to laod up and when it does half the pictures load and thats it and no other pages load. But it works fine on all my other laptops and desktops. I then restored my computer and im still getting this issue.

What can i check and can anyone recomend anything to me?
