I've had TW/Adelphia cable internet and TV for a few years now. Once Time Warner's service kicked in I've had much faster internet, but it's not totally reliable. My cable breaks down every month or two. I was talking to Time Warner and the guy told me they're creating a new service that makes the Roadrunner extreme faster to compete with FIOS. I think he said 10 up 10 down. I'm paying 54.95 a month for my current speed, which is around 9900 down 950 up according to speakeasy. The Verizon FIOS 15x2 is $49.99 and the 15x15 is $64.99 (both have first month free, next six for $39.99 and $54.99.) It looks like that for around the same price I can get much higher speeds. This all seems great, but what's the catch? It looks too good to be true. Is installation free? Is there a huge contract? How reliable is it? Also, I download a lot and Time Warner never throttles me, does Verizon throttle? And do they block Bittorrent like Comcast?

I have linked my desktop to my lappy via direct cable connection. I have "shared" the C: drive on the lappy in order to copy across sys files to save prior to installing a new drive...

The desktop can find the laptop no problem, but it doesn't offer me a SEARCH capability.. Why not?

So merrily the two machines are pinging each other, yet I cant see a way to actually copy files... and YES I have deleted and retried the connection and rebooted etc etc but nothing seems to prove fruitful. Any ideas at all will be a great help and maybe set my way of thinking along the right lines.

ps. the lappy does NOT have a dvd rw...thats why i need the direct cable link.

I am somewhat network savvy but cannot figure out how to configure a standard router to "force" a first page on a wireless hospot network. For example, Customer A connects to the wireless hotspot, but before being able to surf the internet, Customer A must first agree to the TOS and maybe watch an ad...

How can you configure a standard router to "force" a first page? Is it done via VPN settings and/or a proxy?

i have dsl and a belkin wireless router...

it was working fine, now when ever i visit youtube, or dl something (even a podcast) it will start downloading and then stop.

weeks ago if i was connected to the router via ethernet it would work fine... now if i'm wired OR wireless it drops. (i can view websites fine)

i've tried soft reset, master reset, factory reset. same thing.

if i connect the computer straight to the dsl line modem, it works fine - other laptops in the house have the same problem.

I'm not running any p2p stuff, i've cleared cache, cookies, restarted, rebooted everything (like i said it happens on more than 3 computers so it's not an issue on the computer)

At this point i'm thinking that i may have to buy a new router... i thought belkin was a really good brand...

any ideas?

ps thanx for reading.

We hooked up a new pc last night, and using a router, we had both pcs running on the internet.

This morning, upon boot up on the old pc, i get the message that a network area cable is unplugged. Everything is the same as it was, i.e. plugged in.

New pc is a dell with vista, old one is a dell with xp.

Any help would be appreciated=)

Peace=)

I noticed that a bunch of my documents in my C: drive were accessed this weekend. Some are old work documents I have not used in about a year and some are more recent. I am trying to figure out if someone could have accessed my computer remotely by knowing my IP address. Only some documents were accessed, so I know it wasn't my computer doing a security sweep or back-up (if that was the case, all similar documents would have been accessed).

Is there any way to check if someone pinged or accessed my computer?

Some info about my computer:
Toshiba laptop PC
Windows XP
Cable modem - not wireless
Computer is password protected but sometimes it goes into hibernate mode when I take a work break

Ok, I've already looked at all my options, but I'm afraid they are very limited. I can't get dsl or cable, and sattelite is way to expensive for me. I've heard that broadband cards only work well in big cities, but I want to know how much better do they work in rural areas compared to dialup. I get a pretty good cell phone reception where I live, and I don't know if this tells you anything or not, but the mobile web on my phone loads pretty fast, and I can stream video clips as well, I can barely do that with the dial up. Please help, am I stuck with crappy dial up forever?

I only have 1 PC, a desktop in the living room. I want to move it to my bedroom but I don't have a cable jack in that room. I do have a wireless router that I used when had a laptop. I guess my question is, if I purchase a wireless adapter for my desktop, will that allow me to move this PC to the room where there is no jack? Can I leave the modem and router connected in the living room (with no PC hard-wired to them) and still get the wireless signal that I need for my only PC (desktop) in the bedroom? Any information you can provide me in this regard is appreciated.
