Need help on how I can install my homenetwork to meet my requirements listed below:

Here are the knowns:;

1. 2 story house with a basement.
2. Cable modem comes into a closet in the basement.
3. All rooms have Cat5 and cable running that terminate in the same closet as the cable modem.

I want to achieve the following:

1. 2 PCs, NAS and a network printer in the 1st floor den that need to be hardwired into the network.
2. Also have 2 Tivos and 2 notebook computers that connect wirelessly so need to have a wireless access point in a central area, ideally the 1st floor.
3. Have a Slingbox on the 1st floor family room which require a hardwire connection to the network.

Most importantly, I want all the devices on a single network so they could all see each other.

I am confused between a switch, router and access point and what combination I should install them to achieve a single network with both wireless and hardwired connections.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi Everyone:
I'm trying to setup a wireless network through D-Link's Router (DI-624 ver. C) and having some problems. I got the router at a garage sale and I know I have all of the wires connected, but when I use the network setup, it says I'm not connected to the Internet. I tried to log onto 192.168.0.1 and change the setting, but I cannot log on. What do I do? Are the settings from the previous user still set, so am I screwed? Thanks for your help!

I just dont understand whyy the DSl or cable internet providers wont offer me fast internet, when they offer the people less than a half mile down the road dsl and cable.
Everytime i check the availability, they say that there are no servers in my area, and they will let me know when it will be available in my area.
They havent contacted me yet., and i dont expect them to.
What can i do to obtain dsl or cable internet here?
Should i just call and call and call and call them, till it pisses them off enough to where they will come and run the damn lines????
It really makes me mad when they do this kinda stuff.
If anyone has any advice, pleasseeeeee let me knoww, thankss

So i've been downloading a bunch of music lately, and according to the downloader, most of the stuff being downloaded was going at a pace of betweem 50-100 kbs on average.

However, i have bellsouth DSL Ultra, and according to this website - http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ my internet has a download speed of 3130 kbs

If my internet is cable of 3130 kbs, than why is it downloading at only 50-100 kbs?

Any advice is appreciated.

I have a D-604 router with 4 ports. I have connected a 5 port Ethernet switch to that. Since one port on each is used for the cable connecting the switch to the router. I have a total of 7 available ports. However, when I hook up seven only five can access the internet or "see each other". What can I do to allow for all seven (or even more if I were to buy an additional switch) to access the internet?

I can generally download a movie in an hr and 10 minutes now...songs in 10 seconds. Will i see an improvement in downloading? Will there be something even faster offered for less money soon? (incidentally, their slowest speed offered now is 7.8 megabits).

I currently have a G-Network Linksys Router/Modem. One desktop (upstairs, and the furthest from the router) has had trouble staying connected since we bought it. I've been considering getting an N-network router to boost the signal, but I can't find an N-Network router/modem combo like Linksys makes for G Networks. Does anyone know if one is available yet... and if so, where can I find one? Or will I have to buy a separate modem? Thanks in advance.

AirSnare keeps detecting an unauthorized Mac Address on my network. I have turned off my wireless connection, but my homeportal homepage says that there is someone still connecting wirelessly. I suspect that it may be my own 2wire modem/rotuer itself. The problem is that I can not seem to find its Mac Address. Is there a way for me to find it? I am using a 2Wire 1800 HG modem/router.

So, I planned on stop using Yahoo DSL for $25/month, but use Insight's $30/month internet with 6x faster speed. I have the AT&T Yahoo internet modem, the one that also works as the wireless router. I have a bunch of computers(about 4 now, but will grow) at point A and another bunch(3 now, but will grow too) at point B. The distance between A and B is somewhere between 50-100m. I need all of my computers to be able to connect at full speed(1Gbps) at the same time. I don't care if it is wireless or not, but I prefer not to dig for cables.

What kind of equipment should I use to build such connection? An ordinary gigabit switch just won't do the job because it will limit the connection to one gigabit.

Ask for any details I will be monitoring this question closely, thanks.

I use an eMachines desktop running Windows XP. It has worked fine until a few days ago. Nothing changed that I am aware of. Suddenly the wired network connection listed as "Local Area Connection" (my only connection to the net) failed and started showing up as "limited or no connectivity."

The modem, router and cabling are fine as I was able to connect to the internet by plugging a laptop into the same cable and router. I have tried repairing the connection, disabling and re-enabling the network adapter, using IPCONFIG to flush the DNS cache and to renew the IP address, and using NETSH to reset the Winsock settings. But I'm no expert and don't really understand these tools.

The point is, it's a wired connection, the connection works fine with other computers, so I know the problem is in my desktop. The computer recognizes that the cable is plugged in, but can't acquire an IP address. It always gets stuck on "acquiring network address."

Any suggestions welcome. I'm getting desperate.
