Your only running at 54Mbps between your NIC card and the router. What is the bandwidth from the router to the Internet?

the problem is not that you have been sold a bill of goods that you didn't need the problem is probally the DSL or Cable. and it really is not a problem....

I will explain, the speed of your WiFi does NOT affect the speed of your internet connection. Your internet connection is determined by the ISP and the speed at which your ISP's equipment is capable of (Max bandwidth) and the number of users on the same bandwidth that you are on.

if you have high speed cable and it has a bandwidth of 5Mps. That is 5Mps under ideal conditions for a single user. Each user that is on the same 'leg' that you are shares that bandwidth with you, the more users the more sharing of bandwidth.

If you have cable modem or DSL and do not have heavy sharing traffic in your home net (WLAN) then the 802.11b/g is more than enough speed. for several computers the peruse the internet. The only time that speed is really needed is if you transfer lots of files and want it done quickly.

802.11b = is max 11Mbs
802.11g = is max 54Mbs
802.11n = is max 108Mbs

Cable is between 5 & 8Mbs in this area
DSL is between 1.5 & 5Mbs in this area

Oh and the O/S reserves a percentage of bandwidth for the O/S only, Vista's share is larger than any of the previous O/S's share. this also 'slows' your connection.

What type of ISP service do you currently use? Your ISP is the reason of slowing down. Router normally has much faster speed then your ISP, so you won't experience the bottle neck traffic.
