We hooked up a new pc last night, and using a router, we had both pcs running on the internet.

This morning, upon boot up on the old pc, i get the message that a network area cable is unplugged. Everything is the same as it was, i.e. plugged in.

New pc is a dell with vista, old one is a dell with xp.

Any help would be appreciated=)

Peace=)

It more likely to be a problem with the networking software. The two may not be truly compatible with each other.

I assume the old PC connected okay to the internet without using a router?

Then it's most likely a problem with the router or with other hardware that is different than before.

But before you do anything, check the old PC's Device Manager and troubleshoot the cause of the disconnect.

If it appears that everything is okay there, unhook the new PC and use its cable and router port to hook up the old PC. Any luck?

If not, try connecting the old PC to the internet WITHOUT using the router. If it works, then there definitely is a problem with the router. Try installing it again, make sure everything is done correctly and continue checking. Could be a missing driver, I guess, but I don't know why.

here's something you could try...go to start->run type 'ipconfig /release' and press enter. then do the same and type 'ipconfig /renew'. Try to connect again. If nothing, shut off your router for about 30 seconds, turn it back on, and try resetting your ip again.

did you try going to your network connections and click on repair connection? Cause that worked for me but I have DSL and if you have DSL check on your modems connection status to see if it is up or down and if it is down call your internet provider and have them reactivate your modem.

If you're on a router, you have to install the router's drivers to your new computer.
