gigabit and 10/100 network?

for all you network experts whats the main difference between a 10/100 and a gigabit netowrk card
i am looking for a replacment for my abysmal bt home hub which is pretty bad to say the least
whats the best wireless network hub/router for around £50?

gigabit i think is the data transfer rate, it refers to 10 to the 9th power (1,000,000,000) bits. its the transfer rate of that card.. i also dont know about 10/100s..all i know is that its the card speed.. 10/100Mbps.. but i dont know how fast it really is..
