first make sure the wireless switch on your laptop is turned to "on".
next, temporarily disable your security settings on your wireless network. Work through the connection setup and get it working w/ your laptop and then go back and turn on the security and type in those keys into the laptop.

Is your modem connected to a wireless router? Are all the PCs using the network XP, or are some Vista, is the computer you want to connect to the network XP? Is the router, if you have one hooked up, secure with an encryption password?
Listen, if you only have a modem, you need to install a router. The router hooks up to the modem in place of the PC, the PC uses a RJ45 cable to hook into the router, and then your laptop can use the wireless portion of the router.
If you already have a router, is it secured? If so, you need to put the password into the connection you wish to connect to. To do this, click on the little connection icon in the notification area, or open your network connections folder via the Start Menu, Start--Network Connections. Once you are in the folder for your Network Connections, right click on the connection you want to use, then click on the tab for Available Wireless Networks. In that list locate the connections name, click on it, add the password in the box, type it in again in the second box, and then click Connect at the bottom of the page.
You can also set this as a Preferred connction, in that anytime your computer comes near it it connects automatically. You would need to run the Wireless Network Connections Wizard, or its equilavent in Vista, which you locate in the Network Connections folder.
Good luck and I hope you get connected soon.
