If you have a router then get them both associated with the router (get an ip address) and they will be connected.

To direct connect, you can 'try' connecting them with ethernet directly but you may need a crossover cable. (A crossover cable is an ethernet cable only 2 of the wires are swapped internally)

Try it anyway...

You will have to staticlly configure your ip addresses on BOTH machines.

Put the machine name or ip address of the other machine in your url and when you click enter it will ask you for a username/password login. Type in the login information for the other machine and you should be set.

Good luck

The best way is to setup a home network. This will require that you purchase a hub or a router. Connect the router/hub to your modem with the cable that is now connected to your desktop. Run one cable each to the desktop and the laptop.

To set up the network, use the Network Setup Wizard. You'll find it in the Control Panel.

After you have the network set up, simply right click on the files or folders that you wish to share and click the "Sharing" tab. Follow the instructions, there isn't much to it.

in order to connect the laptop and the home PC via ethernet ( LAN CARS) all you need is a criss cross cable. You can get them at any computer store, its dirt cheap. Assign both pc the same gateway, done.

or u can use a HUB and two straight cables to do the job.
