I've networked a new Dell w/XP to an old (3 years) Compaq w/ME using a LinkSys wired router. The problem is that even though both can connect to internet thru modem which is also connected to router the computers don't see each other. The XP machine can see the router and when I explore the router it can see both computers. I wanted to share a printer that is connected to the Compaq via usb but the Dell cannot see it. The Dell does see the network card in the compaq. Could this be firewall issue? How do you turn off firewall in XP?

I just moved and haven't yet hooked up to the internet but here I am on my laptop and I'm connected. I didn't search for networks purposely, it just connected today on its own and I have been online with a weak signal for the last few hours.

Is this illegal? Can the person who I am getting the signal from tell I am using thier network?

I just got a Nintendo Wii. I also have SBC DSL. I have a Siemens 5100 speedstream modem and a linksys broadband B router (BEFW11S4). The router is connected to my Siemens 5100 speedstream modem provided to me years ago by AT&T (formerly SBC, formerly Yahoo) DSL. When I connect my laptop to my network, I have to open SBC DSL connection manager and log on. According to AT&T, there is no way around using connection manager. Anyway, I just got the Wii. It recognizes my SSID. I entered my WEP password but it fails to connect to the internet. I downloaded the latest firmware and changed the broadcast channel to 11. I tried to manually put in the ISP address, DNS address and other information. None of it works. Can someone please help?

Thanks

I have a DLink router DI-524 and 2 pc's both running win xp pro sp2. the desktop is hardwired to the router and the laptop is connected wirelessly. The laptop can share and edit files from all desktop drives but the desktop cannot access the laptop. the laptop does show up under "view workgroup computers" from the desktop but when i click on it to access it i get the following error "dont have permission to use this network resource. contact administrator.......network path not found." I also have simple file sharing turned on. I can share printers from the laptop but not the files. I have checked to make sure that my Zonealarm firewall settings are exactly the same on both machines. Windows firewall is off on both machines and the workgroup is also the same on both. thanks in advance.

I am NOT using a LAN setup. I simply want to connect 2 ADSL modems on 2 computers in different rooms to be able to access the ADSL single line in my house. As soon as another modem is connected, the whole system slows down to molasses; as soon as we disconnect one of the modems, broadband works fine.

I have a Thomson SpeedTouch modem supplied by Telstra and a Belkin...the Belkin has a NAT feature that I can enable, but the SpeedTouch does not have this in the software section (and Telstra tech support won't reveal how to enable this function...they are, apparantly, greedy and want people to buy extra lines, which is unacceptable.)

Thanks for your help.

Four machines plugged into a switch, which is then plugged into the router/modem - that's my current setup. I was thinking of building a spare machine with Linux on it which routes network traffic and replaces the switch. Is this possible, by for example installing 4 network cards? (to replace the 4 ports in the switch)

Or should the machine be placed somewhere else, like for example between the Modem/Router and the switch?

First of all, let me say that I am rather proficient when it comes to networking and the like. I set up my own network at home with a wireless Linksys router, but I have discovered a new problem.

I bought a new Dell XPS laptop a few weeks ago... it works great. I have been using the wireless network card, and have not needed to use the LAN connection. However, today I brought my laptop to work, and plugged it into my network at the office (we do not have wireless), and discovered that I do not have a LAN connection in my 'Network Connections' menu. I have the 'Wireless Connection' and the '1394 connection', but no 'Local Area Connection'. In all my years of toying with computers, I have never seen that connection NOT there!

I am 90% certain it was there when I bought the computer, as I had to hook up with CAT-5 when setting everything up. So where the heck did my LAN connection go? ARRGGGGHHHH.

Any suggestions would be nice. Network setup wizard didn't help.

Sometimes it disconnectes and it never comes back I run the repair test and I have to manually go over to where the router D-link is at and diconnect the back part I don't know what to do.

When I run the xbox live test everything checks out and I get a "moderate" under NAT. I don't understand what this means but I have a feeling it is the reason I can't play online games or hear my friends during private chat. I don't know what to do about it. My connection itself to the network is always pretty good. I tried a hardwire connection and I still got a moderate under NAT. Can anyone help me to get my 360 running a bit smoother. This is really frusterating and disapointing.
