I just moved and haven't yet hooked up to the internet but here I am on my laptop and I'm connected. I didn't search for networks purposely, it just connected today on its own and I have been online with a weak signal for the last few hours.
Is this illegal? Can the person who I am getting the signal from tell I am using thier network?

My apologies in advance if I do not select a best answer myself. I did not intend to be online this long but it's been nice after a couple months of being "net less" to be online again.

There have been cases of people being prosecuted for logging into wireless networks without permission. If the owner of the network browses their network when you are on, it is likely that they will be able to see your computer on their network.
I recommend that anyone who has a wireless network should set it up to require a password.

Technically, its legal considering the person left their network open and unprotected. Ethically, its not proper.

Illegal? I highly doubt it. They should learn to secure their router. :)
If they have logging set up on it, it will show them when your computer connected to their router.
