I'm not an expert, only installed about 5 home networks (my friends think I'm an expert). I think any router will work with any modem as long as the ethernet port is there.
The problem I've run into was with Verizon and their Westell equipment. Some of their early equipment was set up as a gateway modem (?) and was difficult to use because as a gateway it was acting as a router. You had to be sure the correct piece of equipment was handling your ip address assignments.
Once that hurdle was lept, their was also confusion at the verizon helpdesk as to whether login/password was required. Seems some accounts require it and some are more like most cable setups and don't require it. If you give it and it's not needed, you don't get on.
DSL setups with SWBell aka AT&T went very smooth, as did Charter cable setup.
Customer service with charter (once they get on the line) is very knowledgable. AT&T and verizon really seem unaware if you problem does not exactly fit the script.
But you didn't ask about all that customer service stuff, did you?

No, when you buy a router make sure it says works with DSL/Cable modems. There are some routers that only work for Cable and not DSL.

Ask your internet provider for a list of routers that will work on your dsl modem.

Most are compatible with both, but it depends on your provider and the modem required to connect.
A name brand router works with 98% of cable & dsl providers.
If in doubt, ask your ISP if there are any special requirements.

Most of them are, but always check that it does say DSL/Cable on the box. I'm not sure if there are still any out there for dial-up. There is also the other extreme...T1.
