The desktop connects through the internet through a cable modem. The computer only has one port in the back. I'm trying to hook up the wireless router I just bought. So I can have an internet connection for both the desktop and the notebook.

The problem is there is only one port and when I hook up the router the desktop has no internet and I don't think it even sends the signal out to the notebook anyway.

I tried using the wireless router for both and that didn't work either. I just plugged it in like the cable modem. Is there anything I'm doing wrong? How can i get internet for both?

Right now internet is much to slow for the notebook because it's using a wireless card.

I'm trying to share a dell 966 wireless printer from my desktop with my laptop. I'm working with 2 different operating systems the desktop has win 2000 and the laptop Win xp. I have set permissions and can view the desktop from laptop but can't access it. Might it have anything to do with the difference in operating systems.

I am not the brightest guy in the world when it comes to routers and stuff like that. But i was wondering how difficult is it to install a wireless router, namely Linksys 2.4 ghz Wireless Broadband Router
(model #BEFW11S4). I want to get my nintendo wii online and do not want to wait till the lan adapter comes out. Is there anything else i need to buy other that the router? Thank you in advance.

I have seen many offers on Ebay, Wal Mart, and many other book stores. I am looking for something on DVD or CD rom if possible. I also don't want only one year to be able to study. I am going to DeVry, and they don't offer any certifications for Microsoft. Ironic isn't it? Also, if you had to pick one direction that "Networking" is headed, Security, Storage etc... what is your prediction?

Ok this is the situation. I live in a cottage that is right next door to a bigger house. We get our cable from this house. We also get the internet via wireless router. I have extenders on the antennas on the router but it cuts out to much. I have taken the modem from the bigger house and hooked it up at my house plenty of times for faster internet, but I can’t keep doing this because the people in the big house need the internet as much as I do. So the question is can I buy a modem (the same modem they have) and hook it up to my house and have it still work or would I need to tell the cable provider? And if I told the cable provider this I would have to pay for this. I left out all of the details on how I switched the cables so I could get the cable modem over at my house so just ignore that. The real question is can I have 2 external modems running at the same time?

I have a laptop with a wireless internet connection through a netgear router. I also have a desktop that's connected to the netgear router. How do I set up the computers to be able to share files and a printer without having them physically connected by a wire? Is this possible?

My family has two computers linked together using a wired linksys router. My familys computer is the main computer and mine is using the internet by the router. My computer also has the music that I want on the other computer. Im guessing that I need to create a workgroup and then put the files in the shared folder but I do not know how to create a workgroup. I have tried but keep getting an error. My cd-writer is broken so I cannot use that and when I tried sending the files through email+yousendit I got the message:
"Windows media player cannot play the files. If the file is on another computer, verify you are connected to the network. If you typed a path, verify it is correct. If the problem persists, the server might not be available"

Most of the songs were off limewire or ripped from CDs if that matters. Please Help.

I have a psp and one of the reasons I got it was because of the internet browser part of it. But everytime I try to access the internet a screen pops up saying "Communication with server failed a *DNS* error occured 8041040F"

I just don't understand. I do have wi fi and everything it says except every time i try to access a website such as yahoo it appears with the DNS thing again. What is DNS? What can I do to fix this problem?

Please and thank you.

I have a Netgear Rangemax Wireless Router and when I use the Smartwizard it will get to step 3 and then it will bring me to the router settings page on the internet. It will say I successfuly installed the router. But I don't get any new icons on my computer. Then the installation assistant quits and does not continue to steps 4 and 5. I have an internal wireless card in my computer so all i needed was the router, right? I hope this is enough info. Please Help! This has been buging me for days!

I live in a dense area and have many signals to choose from. I realize I must pick signals that are not locked. I am always able to connect to a signal. My computer will show that I am "connected" It will even give me the strenght of the signal. But, latlely I have been unable to log onto the net using Mozilla or Explorer. I the icon on the bottom shows two computers that are usually not both lit up. I think it has something to do with that. I Realize I am not a paying customer and stealing a connection. My pages show up as, "cannot find server" What should I do, besides pay for the service?

I currently have a Linksys WRT54GT compact router. It works well if you are in the same room, but in a two-story house, forget it. I am constantly being dropped. Also, my dads computer whether it is in the same room or not, stays connected for the most part (the signal gets weak, obviously), however, I have the better computer and better wireless card in my laptop. It seems like when I or any computer other than his connects to the internet, it connects but only for a short time. It drops me every few minutes. I got the Netgear RangeMax Next router WNR834B the other day, but cannot figure out how to set it up. I was easily able to set up several networks with Linksys routers in the past, but with this Netgear router, I am stuck! I out the installation CD in but it keeps telling me that I cannot connect. Any help or EXTREMELY detailed step by step instructions would be GREATLY appreciated. The sooner the better, as I am just home for a few days and want to help my parents out with this!
