54MBps is probably a wireless connection. Those can become slow if you are getting bad reception for whatever reason. Try moving your antenna. If that doesn't work, use Windows' network settings to re-log on to your wireless network.

Edit: To clarify: the 54MBps is the speed from your wireless router to your computer. The speed from your router to the internet is likely much, much lower. No service providers in the US that I know of offer anything higher than 30MBps.

The antispyware and antivirus software will not do much to speed up the connection. Please be aware that the internet connection speeds will be limited based on the constraints of your wireless or network card. If your network card is 54mbps, then you won't be able to get a connection faster than 54 mbps. If you are paying for service faster than 54 mbps, then you shold look into buying a faster wireless or network card.

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html
