Can anyone tell me how to configure an ethernet card to accept a LAN connection. This connection is usually joined to another computer. I don'tt want to network them merely switch between the two when required. The 2nd computer is running W98. I appreciate any help. Many thanks.

You'll need a hub or a router, which is an intelligent hub. Mainly what it does is enable multiple local connections to one Internet access connection, correctly distributing all the traffic. Once "hubbed" local connections can also inter-network with each other. You can do both things (inter-network and access internet), or only one of them. Both Windows98 and WindowsXP can configure your ethernet card to use both types of connections or only one (Control Panel, Network Connections). If you have them both configured, you "switch between the two" by using an internet browser to surf the web, and a "File Explorer" to search other pc's in your local network.

To connect Two computers together you can use what is called a CROSS OVER cable or a PATCH cable. The computer, especially if one is XP, should do the rest. Good luck.

I'm not an expert, but I think you need a rooter. Go a computer store and they can tell you what you need to do.
