Yes, you can, but not with your setup as it is at the moment. You need to buy a 'router', the router connects to the internet through the modem (or sometimes in place of the modem) then both your machines connect to the router and the router shares the connection to all your machines at the same time.
It's a pretty common set up these days so routers aren't all that expensive, here's one here as an example that works with an NTL cable connection:

Yes you can use your desk top and your laptop at the same time but not with your modem you need to get a wireless router, they are not expensive and quite easy to install.

You need a DSL/Broadband Router.
And yes both will work simultaneously.
