No matter what i do, the highest i ever seem to get is around 20kbs for a download. my average is around 3-9kbs. Im using bitcomet on a 2mb connection on a pretty descent PC. I hear some people get download speeds like 200kbs!! half that would be nice. takes me like 2days to get a movie. Help! oh and im not using windows firewall. my norton antivirus security centre is doing that.

You are not alone. I find 50kbs a great download speed but only get this every so often and usually not for long.

The main problem with torrent downloads is that you are downloading from ordinary people not organisations with big servers and bandwidths.

Most peoples upload speed (the speed they can send data out) is a fraction of their download speed. Most 2Gb bandwidth packages will have an upload bandwidth of 10Mb or so. You are also accessing their hard drive. This will be slower than an organisations servers and their computer will give priority access to what the user is doing rather than you. You also have to pass their firewall.

Also a factor is the fact that you are downloading small packages of data rather than one big package so the amount of data you can access at any time is dependent on who has what packages. Add to that the fact that you are often collecting data from the other side of the world.

All these factors combined make it no surprise that torrent download speeds are slow.

Try to pick the copy of the file you are after with the most seeders. That makes a big difference. Also if the site shows you the trackers, more than one is better although you will usually find not all will work.

My motto with torrents is take what you are getting and be happy with it.

Set your maximum upload bandwidth in Bitcomet to be about 80% of your overall maximum upload bandwidth. This prevents your net connection getting swamped with upload requests from other people which adversely affects your own download speeds as you can't then request file pieces for yourself.

Basically, it depends on your connection speed and the connection speed of the seeder. You might also want to close other internet software while downloading, like messengers and browsers.
