Great Question and thank you for participating in Yahoo's Q & A. First, you'll need to figure out which computer is going to be the main computer. You'll need to purchase a Wireless Router (which you can pick up at your nearest Radio Shack or other Electronics Store. Just follow the simple directions and install it to the main computer. Because you have the internet service already installed to the main machine and probably a printer, you can now purchase a Wireless Ethernet Card for each of the other computers in the house, if they dont already have one installed. Those machines can now jump wirelessly to the main machine and can share files, folders, internet service and the printer. Be sure to use the "Networking Wizard" on each machine so that it will help you to establish which machine has been chosen as the main machine and which ones are attempting to connect to the main machine wirelessly. Follow the prompts along with the wizard and you should have no problems. If I can help further. add me to Yahoo Messenger and let me know. Larry Radio Shack 01-9590

First ensure your friends computer has a NIC in it. Look for an ethernet jack on the back of the computer. Then you need an ethernet patch cable. They come in different lengths or you can have a custom size made. 300 feet is the max length without a repeater. Just plug in and go. The modem should be a router also, if it has 4 ports. So you shouldn't have to worry about getting an IP address.

If you truly have 4 ethernet connections on the back of the modem (which sounds like a gateway) then you can run a patch cable from one ethernet port on the modem to your computer, and run another patch cable from another ethernet port to your friend's computer. If that isn't feasable, then I would recammend going wireless. The D-Link DI-624 is an easy to use wireless router and install a D-Link DFE-530TX PCI card in the computers. Both are inexpensive and good quality in the wireless world.

If your modem already has a 4 port switch built in, you just need to run a CAT5 (ethernet) cable from one of the open ports to the new computer.
The manual for the modem will tell you how to enable that port, if it isn't already on.
If the new machine has XP, it should detect the connection and setup the network automatically.

you want a difficulty mentioned as a "router" - it somewhat is 20 to 50 greenbacks at any shop. What you're doing is setting up a "community". the guy interior the shop will clarify it - it somewhat is large-difficulty-free - homestead windows quite lots does it for you. Folow the community wizard. it somewhat is instant - in the adventure that your pal is utilising a working laptop or laptop - or under pressure, if he needs to plug a twine in. somewhat, your laptop, laptop selection a million, plugs into the router with a community cable; the router then plugs into your DSL modem. The router, then, contains any added pcs you want to hook up. parent spending below $a hundred including cables, and so on. and, in case you;re a comlete beginner, as much as two hours.

Buy a router.. WRT54g is a good one from linksys.
I have used them for years with gaming applications.
I would ignore the jacks in the back of the modem. There are many reasons those are there, and it's probably not because it's an accesspoint. But if it is, and you can configure it, then try to set that up for both of you, however, sometimes the phone co needs to have both of your MAC addresses.
A router solves that issue, and makes it appear that only one address is accessing your line.

its easier to use a wireless router but if you dont have one than you need to cable each computer to the modem with an rj31x or network cable.

I agree with the Linksys answer. That way, you can have it automatically enter passwords and so on and so forth. If you have one at work, ask the IT guy too, they might be able to provide more info as opposed to little typed tid-bits here.
