You can always unplug your modem from your pc and connect it to your laptop however you wont stay connected on your pc. Chances are a modern laptop would have a built in modem or maybe even wireless which you could use. At the end of the day its complex and you need to know what you are doing, your post here suggests you cant even locate your pc!

you can connect your lapop to the PC via a newrk cable and set up internet connection sharing. If you have a router ou an connect the PC and the laptop to that at the same time. If you have a wireless laptop would suggest a wireless router.

it depends what type of modem it is, it would have to have a built in router otherwise the signal would only go to one computer, what i would recomnide is that you buy a wireless router (from belkin somewere like that) connect it to your modem, then connect the desktop to the router via a LAN cable and then get you interanet signal on your laptop wirelessy, this wont interfie with the other computer as you will only be creating a very simple network, which you only have to share the interanet by
goodluck!
