For example, can I have a Linksys router on my main computer but a Netgear USB adapter on my second computer?

No, they do NOT need to be the same brand. That's what standards are all about -- interoperability.

It depends. For regular ethernet you shouldn't need to have the same brands. If you're using very specific networking gear, like Pre-N wirless or linksys speedboost technology you need to have similar devices to take advantage of the extra functions. But all in all you shouldn't need to have the exact same brand.

like the rest, it doesn't matter but having all the same "parts" does make for an easier experience when setting up a network. drivers, documentation and tech support if needed. i have four
desktops and two laptops that are all linked up to one brand, the first two when i set them up were a learning phase, now i can set up a network in my sleep
