I am NOT using a LAN setup. I simply want to connect 2 ADSL modems on 2 computers in different rooms to be able to access the ADSL single line in my house. As soon as another modem is connected, the whole system slows down to molasses; as soon as we disconnect one of the modems, broadband works fine.
I have a Thomson SpeedTouch modem supplied by Telstra and a Belkin...the Belkin has a NAT feature that I can enable, but the SpeedTouch does not have this in the software section (and Telstra tech support won't reveal how to enable this function...they are, apparantly, greedy and want people to buy extra lines, which is unacceptable.)

Sorry, but that's not possible. DSL is limited to one modem per phone line. I'm surprised you got any throughput at all.
If you want to run multiple machines, you'll have to buy a router -- wireless or wired -- and build a network.

Only one modem DSL modem will work at a time. You could unplug the one you arent using at the time etc.. I have known people who had 2 modems and had one in another room for their game console and unplugged the computer modem so they could plug that one in to game.
However I dont think this is what you are looking for.
One modem, but you may need an additional router.
Are you sure the Belkin item you have is a modem ( in looking at Belkins product list I dont see any modems they make and its probably a router you have )
Looking at the speedtouch general features ( I dont know which model you have ) im sure it does NAT.
simple networking lesson:
connect computer to speedtouch. go to a dos prompte ( start, run, type cmd, enter, and on the new screen type ipconfig.
gateway address for the local area connection will probably be osmething like 192.168.0.1 but if its something different make a note of that.
Now connect your belkin to your computer and do and ipconfig.
If the gateway address is different than the one on the speedtouch then setting up a network with them is as simple as just connecting them ... i.e.... phone line to modem. modems ethernet port goin to the belkin router, ethernet out port on router to computers.
If the gateway ip on the speedtouch and belkin are the same then you will have to change one of them and the belkin is going to be the easiest to change it sounds like.
I cant explain it all completely here but maybe looking up your models might help.

You can only have one router running on one line at one time , and one broadband connection on one line at one time. If you connect up two routers one will sync and the other will not, or they both may no sync. If your having wireless problems try changing your wireless channel also try buying a cable router and plugging it into your adsl router and disable NAT so it runs as an access point only. You can try moving your master socket (not allowed but if you do a neat enough job no-one will notice) to another room if the cable is long enough and keep your router there and see if the signal is any stronger. As i said moving your BT master socket is not allowed but if you are neat enough about it and an engineer comes around they wont notice anything.
