Most specifically, that involve being on boats. I'm not really looking for something that's science related, more like cargo, or shipping or something. Hell, anything'll do....but I'd prefer the latter. Thanks in advance. Oh, and please don't say pirate. I'm looking for something modern. Thanks. ^_^

I was recently terminated from a job where I did not get along with certain people. I heard from one person where I was interviewing at that when he called the department manager of where I previously worked he was saying all kinds of bad things about me. Some of these things, like saying that I did not have the job skills, are blatant lies. I have certification that proves I have the skills and there wasn't ever a time when I wasn't able to do my job. It makes me mad that he should tell lies about me. What can I do about this.

I worked in a call center for MCI trying to sell their long distance service to users of other companies and I hated it, so stressfull. Is real estate similiar to that or is it easier becuase you just put for sale signs out there and have people call you?

I'm considering truck driving as a change in careers but as a beginner, do you need to do the long hauls or will local companies hire you? And for long hauls, how long are you away from home, how many hours can you drive in a day, can you take breaks as you need to, how long are you at home before your next trip, etc? Anyone who can give me some details on a trucking career is an angel and the information would be so appreciated. Except for a few speeding tickets which I got deferred, I have a clean driving record.

If you read my previous question, this will make more sense. I want to open my own day care when I get older.

Anyway, when I turn 16 this following summer, I could get a job, or I could babysit kids. What do you think I should do? I would enjoy the babysitting, but isn't work supposed to be "work" I would consider babysitting as..FUN. I don't know what I should do. Any ideas?? I really need some HELPFUL ideas.
Thanks so much. I don't want this question to be a waste of 5 points. I don't know if I should babysit, (I don't have anyone yet) or work at a movie theater or something..

I have a feeling my boyfriend's business is going to close, but he hasn't heard anything from them. I kinda hope it does because he got a better job lined up but can't quit his current job because of a contract. But anyway, I'm wondering if it's possible that the company is waiting for the new year to break the news. ?

In a nutshell, I blew it, big time. I was completely wrong and I am completely embarassed to say the least. Thank God for anonymity on this site so I can get some advice. I am a supervisor and I told them to leave work early on Friday to spend time with their families. I did not get prior approval from my supervisor to do this and she is upset. I basically shut down my department and gave them additional paid time off for about 2 hours without executive approval. Dumbie, I know. But, it truly never ocurred to me to even think it would be a problem. The department was so slow, and nothing was going on, so I just thought it'd be nice to let them go home early. She, my supervisor, is very upset with me. She said we'd "deal with it after Christmas." I don't blame her for being upset. I've worried all weekend. Do I take it, apologize and hope things are forgotten about later? Or would it be in my best interest to go ahead and start looking for employment elsewhere?Embarassed!

I hate waking up. Its the hardest part of my life (easy life I know) so I dont want an 8-4 mon-fri job. atleast not till im alot older (not yet 22). I dont mind working with people. I have thick skin and can be polite under any circumstances. However, I want to make alot of money. not to spend, but to invest so later I wont be forced to work. time is money, money is choice. I wanted to avoid school and go into business, but long term it is not safe. anyone willing to work hard for less will steal my contracts, therefore its less than stable. so i was thinking about engineering, achitect, pharmacist. something that has a built in protection for the guy with the degree. school is a big risk,(money being spent instead of made) right now i could bail on business n prob be picked up by corrections canada within a year. but thats my failsafe. Ive talked to alot of csc guys, and there is no middle ground. its either get in man the moneys great, or dont even think about it, its not worth it!

I work graveyard shift at my job from 12am - 8:15am. I've been working there for 3 months now. Since day one my job has been sending everyone I work with on lunch at 1:30am - 2:15am. After that, we work the rest of our shift all the way through till 8:15am. Which means we work for 6 hours straight with no other breaks. When we clock out, we are allowed to clock out for 8:30 to make up for the 15 min that they dont give us at lunch. Even if we work past the 6 hours (overtime) we still get no other breaks. Is my job breaking the law by doing this? And if so, what can I do about it? Can I or my co-works be compensated for this?

I am in my 20's and I want to go to collage but I don't know what kind of career I want. For those that have already decided on a career. How did you chose? Did you chose something you already loved to do? Did you chose something that you knew you would make good money? I feel lost, confused, and scared because I don't know what I would be good at. I am afraid of failing.

Thanks for taking interest in my question. I

'm currently 42 and have worked for the same company for 20 years in Pharmaceutical marketing. By the time I'm 50 (maybe sooner) I'm going to want to change careers and work more directly with patients. I have a BS in Biology/Microbiology and a Master of Science in Bacteriology/Public Health.

I know I'll make less money but it will mark a new phase in my career. Just curious about what it will take to get from where I am to where I want to be.

As additional detail, I want the flexibility of shifts that nursing offers and the absence of business travel - I have a disabled son who will require more of my time during the days after he turns 21 and is no longer in the school system.

I'm just out of university and have managed to get myself a good job in an office that I start on 2nd January.
Only problem is that I can't stop worrying about it - will I be able to do it? will they like me? what if I hate it?

Getting the job was bad enough - I had 3 unsuccessful interviews for other jobs so my confidence was at an all time low. On my 4th interview I got the job - but I still have such low self-esteem even though someone finally said yes.

I had a great job in summer but had to leave for college. My manager told me I am welcome to come back, and they do hire me. But, whenever I leave, they take me off the books and this erases my vacation hours and any chance for a raise. My question is, is this legal? Is there any kind of job protection for college students?

I work for this agency and they only pay be $7/hour to take care of seniors at home....mostly companionship types of things. Anyway, I found out that they agency actually charges these people $16/hour! I want to branch out and do this on my own....any ideas on how to get a client? I just really need one regular client....then I could make the hours convieniant for myself AND get paid a decent living??? Plus I wouldn't ask them for that much an hour....I just need something for the next couple of years to get myself through nursing school. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...Happy Holidays

I know that under most circumstances Christmas bonuses are gifts - they are not obligatory. This is my first full year with my company, but there has been no mention of a bonus yet.

However, when I was hired last year I was told that "our Christmas bonus program is very generous and can make up a significant portion of one's income."

In my employment contract it states my "...annual salary is X amount of dollars, plus bonuses."

So ... does that change the nature of the bonus from voluntary to obligatory, or could I just be shi.te outta luck?

For the record, last year about a week before Christmas I got a small bonus though I had only been there a month!

Should I list people with whom I have a more professional relationship with (like past professors who can vouche for my writing, or past employers for internships) but who haven't known me as long as others? Or should I list people who have known me informally for many years, but who don't know my more professional work ability? I'm not sure if time known is more important or if the professional aspect is more important
