I work for this agency and they only pay be $7/hour to take care of seniors at home....mostly companionship types of things. Anyway, I found out that they agency actually charges these people $16/hour! I want to branch out and do this on my own....any ideas on how to get a client? I just really need one regular client....then I could make the hours convieniant for myself AND get paid a decent living??? Plus I wouldn't ask them for that much an hour....I just need something for the next couple of years to get myself through nursing school. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...Happy Holidays

Don't steal customers from the agency that would be wrong. Instead ask your current customers if they have any friends that would like to hire you. Word of mouth referrals are the best kind.

You should check with your city, county, or state government to see if one of them has a department of senior services. Senior centers are also good sources of information.

Where I live, "independent" care givers are charging about $15/hour. I also know several people who work as court-appointed guardians and conservators. The people who are guardians have health care backgrounds and the conservators are CPAs.

You need to keep in mind though that you will probably have to meet certain requirements, like being bonded. If you work as an independent, you will also be responsible for paying self-employment taxes. Since you say that you are going to be doing this for the next couple of years, you should talk to an attorney about setting up a limited liability company, there could be benefits to working through your own LLC. If you do it properly, any liability you face falls on the company and not on you personally.
