research and testing.
There are thousands of job titles some you have never heard of. If you choose without research you will limit your choices to what you have seen.
Have yourself tested to find out your aptitude and interest. I always say if at first you don't succeed give up you have not talent for it. You want to find something you are a natural at then work at it. I happened to find accounting fun and interesting and super easy. I got the degree and passed the test first try. Others find it awful, hard, boring and would be miserable so as soon as they find out they should give it up. Look at what subjects are easy for you that are hard for others and look at what jobs require that knowledge. For example if you are good at math engineering is good.
Then have yourself tested for who you are. Do you like working alone or on a teem, are you a leader or follower, do you want indoor or outdoor work, do you want to dress in a suit or overalls. Are you aggressive or passive. So if you are aggressive you would make a better criminal attorney but if less aggressive maybe a corporate attorney. You would hate being a foot ball coach if you weren't aggressive and a teem player but might make a great nurse working with one patent at time.
Biomedical engineer pays pretty good but you would have to be good at math and keep good grades.
You can pick a career to suit your father but change your mind later. The classes you take in high school will matter when you try to get into medical school but didn't take enough math and science but if you take all the math and science you can get you might miss out on other subjects like accounting that might be your future career.

I don't think you need to pick a career now, but it doesn't hurt to start thinking about it. The best careers are the ones where you do what you enjoy, but nothing is set in stone - most people change careers at least once in their life. Also, look through your state's Employment Outlook data to see what careers will probably be in demand after you graduate, and steer away from anything that will make you less than about 50 grand yearly (what point is there in doing what you like if you can't pay your bills?). But keep in mind that most jobs people hold are jobs they never knew existed in the 9th grade (I'm a Good Clinical Practice auditor in the Pharmaceutical Industry - you won't find that one in the books at your career counselor's office, I assure you). Finally, if you are a creative person, nothing you do will be wasted because you'll find a way to make use of it.

If you are at all interested in careers that involve math or science, start taking them now. You have to take most of these courses in order. e.g Algebra 1 before Algebra 2.

If you change your mind and want to pursue a course that is more liberal arts, you can catch up more easily in that field as there are fewer courses with pre-requisites. And you have not wasted time in math and physics, they will usualy count as electives in college.

Getting a head start in high school will also save you valuable tuition money taking classes in College you could have taken earlier. Even if you are required to take a similar course you will be ahead of the game.

Probably the same advice would apply to foreign language.

You really do not have to declare a major until the end of your sophomore year. But you need to start earlier.

Brainstorm and imagine how you would feel at certain jobs.
Go to your high school counselor and take an aptitude and interest test.
Good luck and any decision made in 9th grade is not
set in stone.

Tell your Dad that its too early for you to make such a decision. The ideal career is doing something that you like and you haven't experienced life enough to know what that is. When you plan on college, start with Liberal Arts. This will give you a taste of almost everything, and then you'll be in a better position to judge what field is right for you. The worst thing is to be stuck with a career that you really don't like. Happiness counts.

When I was in 9th grade, I was the same. Now, I'm in 11th and trust me, you WILL start thinking about it.

First, find things you like to do or are interested in - video games, music, blood / gore? , dead people, computers, paint, etc.

Now, after you've made a list - choose different fields that belong to each and see which you one you like.

Picking a career is really important. You have no idea. If you want to make alot of money - work with health and hospitals.

It is important to think about what you're going to do after graduating. Some kids even do community service at a place where they want to work in the future so that they can get an idea of how it's going to be. I agree with your dad.
