(the people I know personally aren't much help so I thought I'd ask you guys) I'll graduate with a degree in English (Literature) in May of 2008. I can't decide what I want to do. I've thought about a lawyer but don't really want to have that much more school. I've thought about a teacher (public or private) but I'm not an education major so it would take another year in any state to become certified and then not make much $ anyway. If anyone knows of some writing jobs that I may not have thought of that would be great too! or something related to the internet maybe-I'm not sure how that stuff works. I could be an asst. Editor. I could also work for a non-profit organization which I would like, but I might get bored with just an office job (at least one not directly related to literature). What do you think about any of these? What are some other ideas? How should I choose? Any other anecdotes you wanna throw in there are fine too.

You have a supervisor that is nice most of the time but when it comes to making mistakes, she can not admit that it was her fault. She gives this instructions verbally at work but now denies that it wasn't her instructions because it turned out that it was wrong. So, my boss looks at us making mistakes all the time while it was instructed by the supervisor. How will you deal with this issue? Also, you were so angry at her because you were defending yourself that this was her instructions and we only follow what she told us. In turn, she thinks you were being disrespectful for talking back to her.

Do you think this is a good idea? I live in the south and employers don't like single people especially for high paying/ responsibility jobs. There was an article in the Atlanta Journal and Constitution a couple years ago dealing with this. Do you believe this is bad idea? Can it back fire if someone wants to meet my non-existant wife? I guess I can pay a female friend to pretend to be my wife at company events if the need comes to.

I have been offered a job in writing. The letter states the salary, holiday allowance and start date. Is this legally binding so I can hand my notice in? My new employer says it will take him up to ten days to get a solicitor to write the contract but really I need to hand my notice in now.

I am working as a contractor (through a contract house) for the first time. I am now interviewing other places (outside my contract house) and started thinking about how to go about quitting. Should I talk to my contract house first? Or talk to my "boss" first?

I am interviewing for a high end store manager position but one of the internal interviewers that I met with yesterday hinted that I should apply for another job at corporate as well. How do I go about saying that I am interested in that job without losing out on the chance at the store manager job which, I am almost certain to get an offer for? The job at corporate is in an area that I want to be in as well.

Years ago I passed the patent bar. i have 2 years doing searches with the same system the PTO uses. I have searched over a thousand sequences in my experience. Will I start at GS 11? Which step? I have no phd and law firms will not hire me, so I'm looking for govt experience to help me break into the field. My resume gets 150 hits a month on Monster and everybody wants me as a secretary/paralegal. I hear people get job offers from all over the country after 2 yrs of examining. I am just curious as to what salary I would start with at the patent office (GS, step). I would start no lower than a 9, I am sure.

I just got promoted to Assistant Manager and I'm glad I did, but I'll be working 10 days in a row, 8-10 hours a day! Is that okay or should I at least be entitled to a day off? I'll be so grumpy....*sigh*

I have been with the company for over a year now and did not get the raise that was verbally promised to me (upon accepting the job offer) after my first 3-month period nor have I received anything since. 3 People have been hired after me, and through overhearing them chatting, I have come to understand that they have had slight increases and that 1 actually started at a higher rate than I am at - even though I have more education, knowledge and work experience.
I have turned down many other job offers for more money as I really enjoy the place I work at, but would like to know how to successfully ask and get an increase in pay without sounding ungrateful.
Thanks!
