I was given one of the most valuable lessons from my dad, which was:
You can talk to anyone about anything in this world; your car your family; even your genital size if you want...! But what you earn is the most personal thing to you and is something that you will be compared to the most in this world. Therefore you shouldn't ever tell people this as you will be judged on how much money you have and not just on yourself. (even though someone wont sound interested in how much you earn, secretly they will be comparing you and cheering or comiserating in the back of their mind that they earn more or less than you)

People make all sorts of salaries. I think $7 is a low salary, simply because you really can't live on it. Of course, that depends on where you live and other things.
Not to brag, but I make about $58/hour. However, for that, I'm expected to do things that you are not. My boss can ask me to work overtime without any extra money. When you look at actual hours worked, my hourly pay drops to more like $46/hour. Still a lot, mind you.
To get this job, I had to work my way up over 15 years. When I started working, I got paid $16/hour. And that was after a $100,000 college education. Which I feel VERY lucky to have been able to have.
What do I do? I manage multi-million dollar contracts. So, for every $58 my employer pays me, my employer makes between $100 and $200. And the effect of my work brings in $1-$5M a year.
Without knowing your situation, it's hard to compare. If you've been working hard for 15 years and are making $7/hour, I'd feel much worse for your situation than if you just got out of high school.
I don't know if this makes you feel hopeful or discouraged. I hope that you'll see that, over time, it is possible to more than triple your salary. It takes work, the drive to get into a business where it's possible to make this kind of money, and luck. Yes, luck.

As unfair as it may sound, payscales are often calculated by where you are. More rural towns will pay less, even in the higher positions. For instance an economic developer in a small town might make 75k a year...but in a city would make 150k a year or more. A desk clerk in a town of 35,000 people will earn that $7/hr. but in a city or town of say 500,000 people will make twice that amount. It also depends on the business itself. If you work for a small mom & pop type hotel they are allowed to pay less by law if they employ smaller numbers of people. But if you work for say a Hilton Hotel their standard pay rate would be more. You can research this online.
Just remember that you can always go back to school and get a degree that will not only allow you to do something you love but get a great pay for it. Check it out. there are infinte possibilites for grants and scholarships out there. Usually the financial aid office of any school will have huge books that will list all known scholarships that they accept. You may have to ask them specifically for this book. You just have to sit down and spend a couple of hours going through them. Also the school you want to go to will have some funding available if you have good grades. And there is always the Hope scholarship and the Pell grant. It takes alot of work but it is well worth it. Keep a list of those funds so you can continue to request them each year. And just keep digging for new ones. Good luck

Well it may be the going rate in your area. Also you should be getting spiff checks from car rental companies and tour companies. They will pay a fee to the desk person who calls and sets it up. Check into that because someone at your hotel is getting that. It can increase your hourly wage by a few bucks per hour easily if you work that angle. Good Luck Pat

No, but it does depend on your area and how much business you are taking care of... I make salary (few dollars more locked in at 40 hours per week) and work 50-60 hour work week. I am in the same business as you are out in the middle of no where.
