I would like to become a professional body piercer and have been seeking education through an apprenticeship. After feverishly searching for opportunities in the area for about six months, I was offered a position as a piercing apprentice. I was not asked to pay money, but was told that I would be expected to do a lot of work at the shop. I have been working for a few days now and am very excited to have this opportunity. So far I have found that doing work without expecting monetary compensation really challenges one's beliefs in how willing they are to succeed. I understand that this is an intregal part of an apprenticeship, since training in a craft is being provided in return. Considering even the tuition costs for a one-year community college certificate it does not seem that unreasonable if compared to being paid minimum wage. Even so, I have been given a hard time by family and friends who feel that I am simply being "used" and that I am unfairly getting nothing in return.

I looked for a new job for a long time. I finally got the job of my dreams and really "hate" it. Everybody tells me it would be a big mistake to leave and I'm not sure what to do. What do you think? Should I stay with a secure job with a good retirement or risk it?

I thought I was pretty close to a couple of my co-workers, then the other day, I walked in on them whispering something and they suddenly got quiet when they saw me. Recently this has been happening a lot, and I notice they are not as friendly as before.

What is the base hourly pay for servers where you live? In TN it is $2.13 in most restaurants. Some places pay more, but I want to know the average for the area where you live.

I am just looking for information on how much you should make and if you get burned out pretty quick in this profession or not. I am also wondering about how many clients a day you should get. Any information would be helpful. Thanks

I work for an inventory company but we don't have a union, so they do anything they want to us. They know we can't do anything about it. They cut our hours, drop our wages make us take to many lunches and many other things.

I have worked for 5 years at a start-up in the optical communications industry. I have done a lot more planning and testing than I ever imagined and a lot less design that I'd hoped. Any advice for how to move into design engineering? Industry doesn't seem to want to give you the chance to learn and I'm usually too burned out at the end of the day to try much else. I have an EE degree from U of Waterloo in Canada.

I've considered the MASc route and even started taking evening classes, but again the burnout is a problem.

I showed some potential for managerial work, but I see what my managers put up with and I've actually backed off from those aspirations. Plus upward mobility in a start-up is kind of limited because everyone is fulfulling a role.

If anyone knows of other segments of the high-tech sector that are doing well, please let me know.

I'm in LA and I use to work for one but of course since I worked there I can't do survey's with them. There must be tons of companies that try to get people for focus groups. I haven't done one in years and I'd love to be a part of one again 100$ for a hour doesn't hurt either.

This is the case in Pittsburgh. Literally, dozens of companies have the same ads in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for months and months on end. Advertising the same position(s) week after week, and I know personally that these companies need employees;yet, no one seems to be hired for them. I know dozens of people working for these companies and they even said that the company is hurting for new personnel. I have even applied for these companies, and I have not been hired. I do have a good work history and an education. Is it just the capricious evaluations by Human Resource Managers that is the problem? or are these companies just trying to make the local job market look more prosperous than it really is?

I went to Vegas on a business trip because my boss asked me to go. However, I was there for a whole week and he paid me my regular wage. Was he supposed to pay me more, I can almost SWEAR that he paid everyone else more than me, but was I supposed to get all those hours paid as overtime? and did every hour of that week count (it deprived me of my regular life, that's y I'm asking)
