In September I intend to spend about a week in Paris, arriving by Eurostar. What are the things that I should do/ see other than the usual big tourist draws?

My friend just let me know that she might not be able to go with me and my airfare is non-refundable. The hotel is paid for. I'm trying to decide if I should just go and possibly meet some other fun ladies to hang out with. I make friends very easily. I would love to find some girls who love to get all dolled up and go dancing! Otherwise I'm guessing I will just hang by the pool and maybe see a show or two. I obviously can't go to clubs by myself...

I will take a cruise from Seatle to Alaska round trip. On the way back the ship will stop at Victoria (Canada) for 5 hours. I am not planning on walking out of the ship, but still I dont know if they will ask me or not for any type of document. I am a resident alien and have a residency card (green card) but I dont have a passport from my country. I want to make sure I will not get in trouble for not taking a document (for example a passport) If any body knows anything about this kind of situation please let me know.

Why is OK for foreign distance runners to compete for Japanese high school track clubs, but yet as far as I know you have to be Japanese to play HS baseball? If a Kenyan kid can run in the Hakone Ekiden, shouldn't a kid from the Dominican Republic be allowed to pitch at Koshien? I'm just asking for consistency from sport to sport.

I try to read a wide variety of political viewpoints, but one interesting thing that has caught my attention lately is the idea that 'liberalism is a mental illness' coming from the extreme right. I have seen it on blogs (on two right-wing psychologists blogs) on right-wing radio and from right-wingers themselves.

What do you think of this phrase and it's implications, taking into account the political atmosphere, the large scope of generally normal people who are being treated in the mental health system, the mistreatment of the mentally ill and it's stigma and the actual feasibility of one political faction abusing the psychiatric system to gain power over the opposing faction? Does this mud-slinging have more wieght to it when it's mouthed by individuals in the psychiatric proffession? Are there enough protections in place for the rights of individuals to prevent the psychiatric system from being abused politically on a large scale?

I have read on several travel websites conflicting stories about shuttle buses in Vegas. We're going in May and I would really rather not rent a car again. Has anyone taken a shuttle from the airport to their hotel and back? OR a taxi? Please share your experiences and/or recommendations!

Here are my requirements
- Sun, sand (beach), and nice warm water
- Not too humid (not 100% ;) but I can handle humidity
- Not too remote, I do not want to take five flights to get there
- I prefer a new place that I have not been to. So that rules out Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, Ixtapa, Cabo, Hawaii, Aruba, Puerto Rico, Bonaire, Miami.
- I am flying from San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose area
- Flying dates are between August 12 - August 25.

Thanks in advance!
