Currently Houston's economy is booming and is actually become very diverse. Oil is still king however, technology is big with HP and many of it's contract companies, Shipping and the many associated business with the Port of Houston (NAFTA has had a very positive effect here) Medical industries/Pharma jobs are plentiful and they pay well. Real Estate including the home building biz which is still going very strong here. If you come here and want to work, you will get a job!
According to the latest Per Capita Crime rates that I could find online (provided by the FBI) Houston was not even in the top 20. So Seuss needs to do a fact check. The top 10 cities in per capita crime rate (making them the most dangerous)
1 Baltimore
2. Detroit
3. St. Louis
4.Washington DC
5. Newark NJ
6 Kansas City
7.Phladelphia
8 cincinnatti
9 Cleveland
10. Oakland

I went to Grad school at MSU, and then moved here to Houston because I found a job here. There is a lot to do in Houston, it's true, and the cost of living is reasonable. But, in my opinion, Michigan is a MUCH more desirable place to live. Michigan (at least East Lansing and surrounding areas) is beautiful and the weather is much, much better. Yes, MI has harsh winters, but at least it has 3 other seasons as well. Houston is simply to dang hot! And if you are a nature lover like me, there are very few places to hike and camp. I guess fishing is good down her, but again...it is usually so hot!
Why are you considering Houston of all places??? What about moving out west?

It's definitely warmer, and there is a fair job market in Houston (just check out the job section of the weekend Houston chronicle to see)
Good luck making a decision.

I grew-up in Michigan as did my wife and kids!
Then the Mafia moved into our neighborhood (headed by a local businessman - would you believe it?) - so we moved out!
I've been to Huston and liked it. That's not a recommendation, but the idea of vacating Michigan is in my way of thinking one very good idea!

I only caution you that Houston's economy is not diversified and when energy is plentiful, they are prone to recession as well. What is your master's in? The cost of living and winter weather is much better in Houston.

I don't blame you for wanting to get out of Michigan. You're young and apparently single, so I'd say go for it...especially if you plan to go where you already know people.
