I have read on several travel websites conflicting stories about shuttle buses in Vegas. We're going in May and I would really rather not rent a car again. Has anyone taken a shuttle from the airport to their hotel and back? OR a taxi? Please share your experiences and/or recommendations!

Thanks for the answers so far, very helpful. More detail: by "reliability" I mean I've read that the shuttle service has been hired/paid for and never showed up to pick up people for their return trip to the airport! Then they don't get their money refunded without a fight. I also have read about taxis taking people for a "ride" and charging quite a bit, so really I'm just making sure I'm going with the right option. The last few times we went to Vegas we rented a car and that seems to be such a waste of money - especially since I can get down the strip faster WALKING than DRIVING!

Hi...I do the shuttle thing all the time.....I prefer it. You pay a set fee and it is cheap (like $9 round trip to the strip)(as in both ways). With taxis you pay based on the mileage they drive. And unless you know, they try to scam and take the long way every time!!!! I never rent a car in Vegas. I use the shuttle to get to and from airport and I ride the Deuce double decker busses that get me up and down the strip and to downtown. $5 for a 24 hr pass on there or $2 each ride. Very cheap and lots of tourists use it......

Some of the top hotels are on top of shuttle services to and from the airport, most complaints come during times when some issues like traffic was not expected. You might want ask the concierge desk to arrange for Limo pick up at the Airport and back if you can carry the cost.

Keep in mind that May is peak season in Las Vegas - Expect some delays, the strip is always busy with cars back to back as well as Paradise. I do not recommend renting a car at all - if you're only here for a 2-3 days. If you are worried about getting somewhere on time, make arrangements to leave earlier. But I highly doubt you will have any problems, at least the unnatural types of problems.

If by reliabilty you mean will they take you the long way to your destination? Most won't but that doesn't mean there isn't one or two out there. However if you are staying on the strip this should not be a problem as it is only a few minutes from the airport. Ask up front what the fare will be from the airport to (whatever hotel) and they can tell you as they have made this trip hundreds of times. Most cabbies are in a hurry to pick up their next fare so they don't cheat people. Many hotels offer free shuttles so if you are going to fly in, stay and party on the strip where you can walk most of it, then transportation to and from the airport is easy, inexpensive, and reliable.

The shuttles I know of are okay. I rent a car because I don't only stay on the Strip. I go all over.

As for the cabs - NEVER let them take the tunnel from the airport to the Strip. This takes you thru Henderson, which tacks on another $15 or $20 to the fare.

I took the shuttle from airport to my hotel last time we were in vegas and will be doing it again. Its alot less than a taxi and they drop you off and pick you up at your hotel. I had no problems and it was a enjoyable ride and the cost can't be beat.

I have taken shuttle buses, taxis, and limos. None have ever stiffed me in the sense of pre-paying and then not being there. The shuttle bus was the cheapest, but it also took the longest. No cabbie has ever seemed to take the 'long way' to cheat me. As others have said, they are interested in taking care of you and getting to their next fare. If you think they have cheated you, get their name, cab # etc, and report them to the number listed quite prominently in the cab. Vegas doesnt want cabbies taking advantage of tourists.

I Have gone to Vegas countless time and have used the shuttle since Last century and it has never failed me. It is a good way to get back and forth to the airport

We go to LV quite a bit and tend to stay longer than most, we use the bus(CAT/Deuce) or the free hotel shuttles 99% of the time to get around LV.

From this site you can access all of the public transportation.
http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/transportation.cfm >This site lists all of the free hotel shuttles >click on the hotel group you're interested in and then "LVA MAP-click here"

For LV Taxi's
http://www.taxi.state.nv.us/faresfees.htm
This is the official LV Taxi Authority site, it's a good idea to take down their phone # and keep it with you just in case you feel you were "long hauled"

The Bus(CAT/Deuce)
http://www.rtcsnv.com
We take the bus from McCarran, $2.50 for a 24 hour pass. The #108 Paradise & #109 Maryland Pkwy bus stops at the airport about every 6 minutes. catch the bus from, "Ground Level Transportation 0" the escalator down is on your right, just before you get to the baggage claim area.

Monorail
http://www.lvmonorail.com

Trolley
http://www.lasvegasstriptrolley.com
This one is convenient if you're going to/from certain hotel/casinos such as the LV Hilton or Hard Rock. The site has a very nice map to show you exactly where the trolley stops.

feel free to e-mail me through YA if you have any Q's.
