I am asking about the area near Aggstein. I have heard that medieval Lords put chains across the Danube to stop boat traffic and make them pay tribute. I know this did happen on the Hudson River upstream from New York during the Revolutionary War (not for tribute, but for defense). But did it really happen during the Middle Ages? Is there any evidence?

I'd stay in budget accommodation, but I'd like to know how much I could expect to pay for a meal in a nice restaurant, for snacks during the day, to get into sights, public transport, and the Spanish Riding School. Prices in Euros, if possible. Thanks!

It's honestly my all time favourite movie. When my Mother was younger she loved it too and she visited Austria and she went to the lake (where the von Trapp children fall into the water) and the pond where they dance around and she visited the glass house (In 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen' song)

I really want to go and visit these and other places where the movie was made!

My Mum said she's not sure if they'll still excist.

Could I go and visit these places??

I am very interested in someday moving to Austria and this seems like a job I could do. I am an English major who is currently working on her Bachelors degree and I have taken 3 years of college German. I am also planning on going to Austria to study German at some point in the next 2 years. How difficult is it to find and attain such a job in Austria and does it pay fairly well? Do they have very high educational requirements for those who want to teach English? Thank you in advance for any answers! :-)

Dear all,
our family is considering moving to Austria. Could you give us a little detail on the Education in Austria. What quality is it compare to other countries, how much does one year in college usually cost? (I heard it's free, but I think it's too good to be true:)
Thanks a lot!

This line is actually from a comic terzett by Mozart. I am a big Mozart fan and also interested in linguistics and dialects. In fact I am thinking of getting a minor in the German language. If you would like to see "Ja, an Dreck" in it's entire context it can be found at the bottom of the page if you follow this link:http://www.mozartforum.com/VB_forum/showthread.php?t=1557&highlight=bandel+terzett
I realize there is a translation there and it says, "Yes, I've got it up to here with $hit!" But, the reason I ask is because I have seen so many translations of this one line! I've seen what you'd think it means in standard German, "Yes, in the mess (or dirt)," but I also remember somewhere along the line reading that it actually means "***** it" in the Viennese dialect. Is this true?

I am going to Austria soon and I am wondering if anyone knows how to get to a town called F u c king in Austria from Salzburg by train or bus (if possible). I am serious. I know it's about 20-25 miles north of Salzburg and about 2-3 miles east of the German border. Some directions will be helpful.

All I can remember is a huge farm house with a big court yard and steel ornamental fence on the front. Mom married a German soldier in '42 and she stayed till given Russian occupation ultimatum in '45; divorce or move., I remember a barge with many women and kids, babies, baby carriage and feather bed, (just the feather cover ) and that's all. I've never been back. Mom, 85 , goes back every year. She had 5 sisters , 2 still alive, one last jear went to a extended care old age home. I know that one of my cousins family has a vinyard and sell their own wine. Mom brings back momentos every year for all of us. This year my sister went with her.
The odd time I feel nostalgic and wonder whether I should leave myself with the memories i have or take a chance and go - taking the chance of having my idea of the old place, "The Burst Bubble syndrom " I think it;s called, destroyed. Also called a reality check. LOL
