Canada and the U.S.A. are quite different, even though on the surface they appear similar.

Both are democratic societies, but while the U.S. has two main political parties, Canada has four. The system of elections is also different, and the justice system is more formal like that of the U.K.

Both have many immigrants from all over the world, but in the U.S. the immigrants are more assimilated, while in Canada they retain their old world culture and dress. i.e. while U.S. is a melting pot, Canada is more of a stew.

Hand guns are mostly prohibited in Canada and very strictly regulated for collectors and others who are allowed to have them.

People in the U.S., sadly, tend not to think about Canada (or any other country); while Canadians like to tout superiority over americans and make fun of them for ignorance. (Which in fact, is from lack of exposure of canadian things, while canada and other countries are greatly exposed to all things American).

Lots of other subtle but important differences between the two countries.

Lots Canada and the USA have different forms of governement although they are both a democracy, they work completely different. The president actually has a veto power the prime minister doesn't. Thats another difference the USA has a president and Canada has a prime minister. The USA has states where as Canada has provinces and territories. Their climate is different depending where you go in each country. Canada is a commonwealth country where as the USA isn't. Canada is also bilingual recognizing both French and English as the official language. Canada has alot of natural resources where are the USA has alot more industry. Canada has less people than the USA. Ummm I dunno its hard to think of all the differences...well thats all I can think of right now.

Canada is a completely different country, and therefore fairly
different than the US. I am Canadian so I prefer Canada, but neither country is actually better than the other, just different.

I will not sit here and list off all the differences between our two countries because that is just not possilble in the time allowed, even though we have many things in common we are still a seperate and unique country and there are many things you'll find in Canada that you will never find in the States. and I'm sure, vice versa.

You will find similar people in both countries. But there are a few misconceptions that I would like to quickly clear up. We do still have an identity, I know it's hard to believe when you absolutely nothing about somebody to just assume that there is nothing to know about said person, but that doesn't mean that there is nothing to know, and you will find most Canadians will actually be a little insulted if they are mistaken for Americans. No offense to Americans, we just don't like always being in your shadow. We are better liked internationally than Americans, yes nobody picks on us because we have you as our big brother, but that doesn't mean that we go around rubbing it in everyones face, and it doesn't mean we're proud of it. The only reason we have almost no military or defense (and we have a lot more than americans think we do) is because when we tried your president came up and destroyed the whole thing (How many of you Canadians remember the Avro Arrow?) Yes our suicide rate is higher, but our murder rate and crime rate is much lower. And one more thing, yes U.S. military wise you are very strong but we are not the kind of country that you would be able to easily invade, trust me, I've read my history, you've tried before, right before the revolution, it didn't work. I'm mainly posting this to defend my country from some ignorant americans who probably know less about our country than they do about Jupiter. Don't just assume we have no identity because you've never taken the time to try and find out about it. Not saying all americans are ignorant, but a couple of the ones who posted an answer here sure are.

One is the US and a republic.
One is Canada and parliamentary.
Canada is colder, longer.
One has a semi-tropical climate in parts.
One has more bears.
One has more guns.
One talks funny.
One imports talent to the other and they never leave.
One has free medical care to all its citizens, and extremely high tax-rate.
The other has extremely high medical costs for its citizens and free medical for Mexico's transplants, and an unfair and hostile tax-rate for everyone.
Stay here, and work to make the US a better place.

Canadian Whiskey sucks as bad as American Maple Syrup. Canadian fishing is better, but American beef is tops.
Canada has better hockey players, but they want money, so America has better hockey teams.
Canada's flag is red and white, Socialist colors. America's is red, white, and blue: socialism bruised blue with the fight to get there.
Canadian beer is real beer, with lots of alcohol. American beer is weeny pilsner with little alcohol, but LOTS of drunk drivers.
Canadian cops are elegant, tough men. American cops are thugs who want to beat people legally.
"Mtv" sucks, "Much Music" doesn't.
When Americans get sick, they order prescription drugs cheaper from Canada, when Candians get sick they go see American doctors who know stuff.
