In passenger boats they always have life jackets for the passengers, and in the case of ships life boats too, so that in case of an accident the passengers can survive. Why do airliners have life jackets under the seat but not parachutes?

I am going to New Zealand South Island for a couple of days during Easter, immediately few days before Good Friday until Easter Monday. I am wondering if there is anything going on in Christchurch during Easter period (Good Friday till Easter Monday) or is it a ghost town during that period? How about Fox Glacier or Mount Cook during the same period then? any tourists/holiday makers? Thank you

1 person is our group is a Taiwan (republic of china) citizen. We will be traveling to Dubai in 2 weeks. We will be traveling on Emirates going to Dubai and returning to US via Alitalia Air. Am not sure which visa he should apply for. I have looked at hotel sponsored visa, but we will be staying at 2 different hotels during our stay. Some hotels say you need to stay at their hotel the entire time for them to sponsor, which may cause a problem as we will be staying at 2 different ones during our stay. Please advise! Also, if through a Tour Company visa..any recommendations as to which one? Thanks!

This will be my first time on an airplane and I'm flying US Airways from Charlotte, NC to Washington,DC (Reagan Airport). I have no idea of what to expect from parking at CLT to finding the Metro in DC. I'm traveling with 2 pieces of luggage (planning on checking one in [however I do that]) and bringing my laptop. I'm buying tickets online this weekend. No advice is too simplistic or minor. Thanks for the help.

I was told there are absolutely no soda/vending machines on these cruise ships. For those who have been on such cruises before, is this information correct? (I don't own credit cards and therefore cannot "register" one up front like most people do in order to make purchases on the ship....)
