Although there has been some relaxation of the rules on what can be carried on board, for example it is now possible to carry on some liquids, gels and paste the situation remains much as before.
Under present conditions Heathrow is choatic and a very unpleasant experience best avoid it travel to Amsterdam by KLM City Hopper and connect from there. Alternatively use one of the UK regional airports for with good international connections like Manchester or Birmingham, Use a charter flight (they sometimes have available seats) from a regional airport too.
The link below will take you too the relevant BAA site:

Check with the airlines. I know that you cannot have knifes, guns, etc.
If you bring some type of an aresol can like Hair spray or something, make sure it stays with you in your carry-on, because the cargo hold where they keep the luggage is not pressurized, so it will make a mess in your bag or luggage or whatever.

It may depend on the airline, if you are asking this because you have recently booked a flight I'd check with the airline that you are flying.
There are of course the obvious no-no's but some airlines may have different specific rules. Hope this helps.
