The current exchange rate is US$1 to EU$1.32. As to their differences/similarities, they are both backed by open market economies, with little if any of their value backed by any real "treasure" or precious metals. The US dollar was at one time on the "Gold Standard", meaning that each dollar printed cooresponded to a dollars worth of gold in the US Gold Reserve. Such is not the case now. As for the euro, it is the monetary representation of the national economies of 15 member states of the European Union. There is a basic design for all euro notes and coins with each member state being responsible for designing the face to represent their country.

The difference in value changes almost hourly. Check any of the currency converters on-line, such as XE.com (which is quite easy to use). As of a check this morning, one Euro was worth $.33 more than a dollar.

A prior answer included a currency exchange website that will give you the current rate of exchange: www.xe.com.
Also keep in mind that each time you exchange money you will also pay a fee for doing it.
Another factor is that the cost of goods is different in each country and can impact the effect of currency differences. For example, the cost of food, transportation, and lodging is going to be higher in a large city like Rome, Paris, or Berlin versus a regional or rural city. Goods are also expensive in Europe due to higher taxation levels.

The exchange rate fluctuates constantly - on average you need $1.30 for every Euro you want to purchase.
