I recently got engaged. My fiancee and me have been together almost 2 years. We are very happy the only problem is we work in the same building. We know we can't keep our secret at bay much longer. My engagement came as a surprise since almost none of my co-workers knew I was even seeing anyone. At first we kept it quiet because we didn't know where it was going then by the time it became very serious we wanted to protect our relationship from gossip. We do not work for the same company nor do we have the same supervisors but our companies have strong ties (we both work in the higher educational field). His immediate supervisor knows about our relationship but the President of my company does not. Since our companies are closely affiliated we have been anxious about it. We are in love and want to share our happy news openly but are afraid of consequences. We both want to maintain professionalism and decorum. Everyone wants to meet him. The funny thing is they have. Any advice?

Hi, I have seen a lot of things in the workplace, but this one has me a little puzzled.

I have a coworker (she is a new hire- 3 months on the job) who wants to know everything I do at work and as soon as I tell her, she will go ahead and do exactly the same thing. If my boss asks me to go meet someone for a project, as soon as I come back, she will ask ton of questions about the person. And by the end of the day, she will call the person to schedule a meeting to discuss about pretty much nothing. Or when I am writing an email, she will come over my desk and watch what I am writing without my consent. She would ask me questions about my private life as well, althoguh I have been direct with her on that.

I am a little concerned that this may have an impact on my performance.

Now, my question to you is this: what would be her motivation for doing this? How would you handle this situation in a friendly way? I am a male by the way.

My mother-in-law recently spent the weekend with us. Upon arrival, she clearly said to me (and in front of my wife), "I brought you a present," and then opened a bag containing a small bottle of choice vodka, and a bottle of Kahlua. I thanked her, and then she -- not me -- placed them in our pantry. One night at dinner we each had a vodka tonic. When she left, I noticed my "gifts" were gone. I asked my wife where they were and was told her mother had taken my "presents" with her.

Suffice it to say I was insulted that someone would be so
rude and lowbrow to abscond with one's gift. But there's
more. I later found out from my wife that when they were
unloading her mother's car, her mom told her the libations were a "treat" for herself.

Am I making too much of this or is it there some subliminal difference between a "gift" and a "present" that allows the giver reclaiming rights?

I invited my cousin and her son to my daughters 1st birthday party. She now wants to bring along her kids father and his god son (who I only seen once) know nothing about. to the party. Well-meaning I have to make another speical trip just for 1 more goodie bag. And restart the head count, I think its rude-she has done this before in the past. Any ideas on how to tell her no and what would you do?

The first day my boyfriend andI moved into our new house, my next door neighbor came over and began shouting about the barking dog(was a friend's dog) granted, he does bark but he is controlled. later that day I was warned by another neighbor of how grumpy this man was and to ignore him. now, whenever music is being played in my backyard( I can hardly hear it) or the dog is over, my neighbor is taking a radio and placing it against the fence, toward my yard and playing it at full blast. I feel I am not making that much noise and other neighbors are looking at me because of his music! What should I do? Who is at fault? What rights do I have as a homeowner?

ok, I'm 19 years old and two nights ago I was with my friend that's a girl and we driving around in her car joking around and I farted by accident not once...but twice. I don't know if she heard it the first time but she definitly heard it the second time being that she rolled the windows down. Then she kind of mentioned it but didn't ask if I farted. I was really embarrassed and she hasn't texted me at all since then which she usually does. I know it's stupid, but would she ditch me as a friend because of that? Do you think I look 'gross' and rude to her now? haha it's stupid but I keep thinking about this. Help please?

I think just by the way I was raised I was taught to help people in need. One time I remember it was snowing so bad in Colorado that I was on my way home and saw this care on the side of the road. The car had a flat tire and the occupant was just sitting inside the car.

I asked the occupant did they need help or was a tow truck on the way, she replied no and that she did not know how to change the tire. She had a infant in the car with her, I told her to go wait in my car while I fix the tire, it was snowing so bad that it took me almost 30 min to change the tire. Once I put the tire on and got her back on the road she was very grateful and thanked me many times. I asked her how long was she waiting before I came up, she said almost 2hrs on the side of the road.

It amazed me that nobody stopped to help her or see if anything was wrong. So have you ever helped a stranger out?

Last night, my wife and I ordered pizza to be delivered. Over an hour later, the meal finally arrives and after they leave, I realize they did not bring the cheeze sticks, did not bring the bbq sauce for the COLD chicken, and we got a 2 litter soda instead of a 20oz. I called back and they said they didn't even get the order for the cheesesticks, which I clearly said and repeated twice when I placed the order. So we didn't pay for them and instead of going through the whole thing with them I just hung up. My wife called them back and demanded the cheesesticks and when they brought them (2 hours after placing the initial order) and said "That'll be $3.85 please" she said "Oh, we tipped the first guy $4.00, that should cover it." It was really funny at the time, but I worked fast food for a long time and understand how that stuff happens. I couldn't have done something like that. When I did work fast food, people flew off at me like that all the time. What would you have done?

I have one cool boss. I mean check out women with the other male employees cool. Usually a easy going dude to be around, but still professional.

Today that all changed when i transfer a customer call to him since he was the only manager on site to take it. And specifically told me to give him all the calls that come in and he is "never busy" quote on quote. A woman called and he was too busy to help her. I take the call and she was very upset about a withdrawal from her account and she was in tears and was mad that he hung up on her and didnt help her. I calm her down to give her advice and he tells me to "i cant talk to her now and to take her number", right in the middle of my advice to her.

I cheered to woman up and she was very happy. My manager than gets pissed at me for not ending the call when he said to and taking her number for him to call her back later.

Then he becomes a jerk and calls me on mistakes i made that i didnt know better about at the time.

What do you think?

I may be just paranoid about this but...

Today when I went to work (still at work actually), and got a chance to talk to my coworkers in the lab, the guy was blabing like normal, then after I asked them if they needed any help and stuff (cause I will be leaving soon and theres not much for me to do), I get attacked with random things like, he starts making the sound "blab blab blab" (like I talk to much?), or you can help by going home, and **** like that. WTF?

It seemed like last week, I was off okay with the coworkers.
And hes the one that finds me to blab all day long when HE's got nothing to do.

What the hell is going on?

Also, when I greet (say hello/morning) to the other lab coworkers are ignoring me...???

Do people just turn on you like that? I'm not very experienced with the work place, and this is like my first real job. (Unfortunately, I'm not doing all that well in it)

Is there anything I'm missing about workplace politics?

This iranian middle-eastern girl at my gym who i have had problems with(bordering on racial differences,i'm asian-american)so perhaps there were ways we were very harsh towards eachother. But anyway i only had 1 real good conversation with her which was 2 months ago where i pretty much restrained my temper, was polite respectful the whole bit...After that she ignored me for a bit untill about a couple weeks later where she has tried to get my attention, pass my way etc....look at me,gaze at me etc...but i didn't oblige much because of past differemces that were still burning me up.Why would she continue toi act this way?(we both live in losangeles by the way which is also why i'm not too trusting of her.)

Umm, hello, this is America (that person probably has lived here for quite a long time to know the rules)?

Someone asked the question "Is it true that all beautiful women are crazy?" I answered " Sounds like pure sour grapes to me" Got a violation. How is that a violation? I must not understand something. The question sounds more like a violation to me. Insulting every beautiful woman seems rude to me.
