How about, "They were digging up drains at the back and front of the house but did not put any form of bridge across, so I could not get out to come to work"
"The cat got stuck under the bath so I had to wait for the RSPCA"
"A Lady went into labour and when we got here to hospital she asked me to stay until her husband got there"
" My train was stuck in a tunnel all day and we could not get out because the line (third rail) was still "live."
"My bus hit a low bridge and i was trapped in such an arkward place that they could not get me out for six hours and then I had to go to hospital for a check up"
There are others I have heard of all these actually from one man (not me my imagination isn't good enough) for quite a long time he got away with it for his cheek. Then the crunch came

The more details you give, the faker it sounds. If you were truly sick, you wouldn't care what they thought. PS. a broken tooth worked for me. Even shoved Kleenex in my mouth so I would talk funny then I said I had an emergency appointment.
