He sounds like a complete a**hole. Sometimes, when people are frustrated or overwhelmed they may snap. However, he had no right to disparage you for past errors when you were training for your job.

I have found that more often than not laid back bosses use this laid back attitude to cover for deeper rooted problems the most common of which is laziness and ineptness.
Some people think that if they can get you to like them you will overlook their lackadaisical work habits.
Familiarity breeds contempt.
Most people cannot separate work from play. As a manager he is a “them”. As a “lower level” employee you are an “us”. You know that there is always a line between us and them.
Your boss has a lot of growing to do. He should never have been placed into a position of authority by the sounds of it.
Just do your job and do it well and hope he is recognized for what he is by his boss. Don’t try to make it your job to watch or question what he does though, you will wind up jobless.

I think he is a jerk and needs to calm his butt down and maybe he had a bad wknd to boot but no reason to get on you over something he should have done in the first place . He should appologize and i am sure that the lady you talked to feels much better now . Good for you that you made her feel better you did the right thing regardless if your boss does not think so . Let him blow his horn elsewhere . I have no sympathy for ppl like that being in charge . good luck .

I think all the nice, cool guy thing is like a facade.
People get to high places like that.
I think in reality your boss just wants things done when he wants them. No exceptions, and to get done things as soon as possible with least hassle/delay....
Your boss might seem like a nice guy, but dont be fooled and let your guard down...
Remember, you're a worker.
When workers become useless in the eyes of the employer, its out the door you go. Despite working there for #### of years or being the "best pals" with whomever.

try not to overreact to the situation. sometimes its hard when you get along with a collegue or boss when you know them on a really good level.
the fact that they got upset might have nothing to do with you. it makes it twice as hard when you get along with someone and they become upset with you.
give this person some time. try not to let the situation get the better of you. act as you usually would and things will return to normal.
he could just be having a bad day. don't worry about it. he'll come around.
