I recently got engaged. My fiancee and me have been together almost 2 years. We are very happy the only problem is we work in the same building. We know we can't keep our secret at bay much longer. My engagement came as a surprise since almost none of my co-workers knew I was even seeing anyone. At first we kept it quiet because we didn't know where it was going then by the time it became very serious we wanted to protect our relationship from gossip. We do not work for the same company nor do we have the same supervisors but our companies have strong ties (we both work in the higher educational field). His immediate supervisor knows about our relationship but the President of my company does not. Since our companies are closely affiliated we have been anxious about it. We are in love and want to share our happy news openly but are afraid of consequences. We both want to maintain professionalism and decorum. Everyone wants to meet him. The funny thing is they have. Any advice?

I met my husband at work three years ago (we just got married in April). Unlike you, we worked for a family owned business under the same supervisors (a married couple). We kept our dating a secret for a while, but when we decided to move in together we came clean with both owners of the business. We were very careful to keep our personal life away from our jobs. I would suggest a one-on-one conversation with your boss. Honesty is usually the best policy.

Congratulations! i hope you two are very happy always! I would be proud of your engagement, go in & speak to your boss and let them know whats happening, I'm sure it'll be ok and everyone will be happy for you. These days, it's not a big deal even when you do work together.
Good luck

Approach your supervisors together and announce that you are engaged to be married. I see no reason why anyone wouldn't be happy for you and frankly, I think you're making a lot of drama out of nothing.

As far as your job goes... if inter-company dating/relationships is not expressly discouraged in the Employee Handbooks - you are safe.

It sounds like you two dont collaberate or have influence on projects or need eachothers approval for funding... so it should all go over well and I wouldnt worry about it.

It's fine. If you dont work in the same company, I see no reason to worry. They can NOT fire you for marrying someone who works in the same building. I'm sure you can sue for that.

That's an awkward situation. It might be best to find another job to avoid the problem. As long as you two don't work together and don't even work for the same company it should be acceptable. They might even through a joint party.
