My husband and I work with a woman and received an announcement of her graduation. We work in a small, family like office. We don't want to break the bank as I've never even met her. How much should we give and is it ok to give a check?

with all the news surrounding Big Brother at the moment I wondered what people thought of this..

On a Big Brother forum people were saying black people can refer to each other by this term but if a white person says it then it is offensive..

Is the N word offensive?

If the word is offensive surely no one should be using it regardless of skin colour..

Is it OK for black people to use the word and NOT OK for white people..

Should everyone wipe this word from thier volcabulary?

Personally it is not a term I ever use but the discussion earlier has me thinking

We got an "open house" invitation for my husband's cousin's kid's high school graduation. They live 2 states away, see them 1-3 times a year. We aren't going to the open house. I don't know what is appropriate to send as far as a gift. I was thinking $25 was a nice gesture. There's tons of cousins...and kids, so this will set the precedence for the other kids that will follow. Ideas??!?!?

I'm going out tonight with some friends tonight and although they have a designated driver I will be driving seperatly because I have to be up early for work tomorrow. I don't want to look goofy sipping water. That's just an invitation for people to try and buy you drinks.

Someone recently loaned me money & the situation definitely calls for a thank you gift in addition to repayment.
Any ideas for an appropriate gift? It will be for grandparents.

I don't know about y'all, but I am up to here with all these cell/mobile phone users not using proper etiquette when talking on their phone. What gives?

1) Watching a movie, and some jerk was behind me using the walkie-talkie feature of his phone, so I got to hear him and the other person's conversation It lasted about 2 minutes before I went out to complain to theater personnel. When I left the theater, I was confronted with the evil eye of one of his friends. Luckily, I was carrying my toddler son, so I didn't get into a physical altercation.

2) Standing at an ATM, watching somebody take up a place in front of one of the machines, yapping on his phone, about God knows what? The light was flashing, indicating his ATM card was not even in the machine. I gave him a good piece of my mind before a quick exit into the open branch, to complain.

3) Sat next to a lady at work, who spoke on her cell phone at least 4 hours a day (I'm not exaggerating) to all of her friends.

Are you a special occasion person?
Are you a "Sorry I Forgot" person?
Are you a "You're getting this card and you'd better just shut up and appreciate it" person?
Are you an "every occasion" person?

I'm an every occasion person - I send St. Patrick's Day cards to everyone, even if they're not Irish!

here is the story:
My roommate borrowed a $400 vase (it wasn't a vase but it kind of looked like one) from his friend.

About two months after my roommate borrowed this "vase" it happened to be standing on the floor next to the couch in our living room (I was not the one that put it there, and I never used that "vase" for anything). We were watching a movie, so the room was fairly dark, and on my way to the kitchen I accidentally knocked the "vase" over and the vase broke. A $100 piece of the vase remained unharmed.

Now the owner of the "vase" expects me to pay him $200 for braking the vase. The owner told me that "he is being nice for only making me pay for half of it".

Although I have more than enough money to pay him saved, since I am college student, I don't have a steady source of income, so $200 is not pocket change for me.

Please give me your honest opinion on weather I should pay him for braking the vase or not.

thank you for your responses, and sorry that this is so long.

When I was at Taco Bell yesterday, I ordered my food and went to get my drink. Another person had just finished filling their cup and was now searching for the right sized lid and a straw. While he was doing this, I began filling my own cup with Coke. Suddenly, he turns to me and begins staring at me in an irate manner. "You separated me from my tray!" he screams, and I notice that his tray was, in fact, on the other side of me. He must have left it there temporarily while he went to look for a lid for his drink. "Huh?" I say to him. "You have come between me and my tray!" he repeats. It was as if I had separated a mother bear from her cubs. Then he began to swear at me in Spanish. I calmly continued filling my cup, apologized for any inconvenience, and went to get my meal. WTF??

I am involved and pregnant and the new guy at my work (who is flirting with every other women in sight) will not leave me alone. Everyday he is sending emails, that I do not respond to, he always is finding some stupid excuse to talk to me, and he will not leave me alone. I have told him I am engaged, pregnant, and not interested. However, I guess he sees how I act with my co-worker friends and he thinks that that is okay behavior for him to do as well. But he is not understanding that we have known each other for 3 years and he's only been here a month. He gets creepier and creepier everyday and I have been nice about it. However, this morning he decided to touch my head randomly and now I am fed up. What should I do? I've been ignoring him and walking away, but when he walks into my office and blocks me from getting up, it gets really bothersome. Help!

We are planning a trip in October which would require my dh taking 1 week off work. Would this be appropriate to bring up in an interview for a new job or should he wait till he gets the job and the time frame gets closer? We are aware that this would be unpaid vacation time. I don't want to cancel the trip, it's been planned for over 6 months.

A friend of mine is getting married out of state in August. Her shower is in July. I can't make it to the shower, but I am planning on attending the wedding and reception. I asked a question about giving cash as a gift at the reception, and received responses that it was sort of tacky, and that a gift would be better. One guy even said that bringing a gift to the reception was tacky. My question is: Should I send a gift from her registry to the shower even though I can't attend, then just show up at the reception empty handed, or should I send nothing for the shower, but bring a nice card with cash to the reception? Or should I do both--gift for the shower, money at the reception?
