Depends where. I don't usually 'go out' to pubs and such, I don't feel comfortable when it gets late. And I don't really like cities I don't know well either. But going to a concert (classical) or a restaurant in a good part of town, and taking the train back in these parts of the country, I don't feel unsafe doing that. I've never gone out a lot, I only go out occasionally, even when I was a teenager/college student.

I think it can be safe, depending on where you live. When my husband and I go out on the weekends, we always take the train into town. Of course, we live north of the city (nice, safe area) and we never go past downtown where the majority of the crime is, so in our case, it's safe. If you live in a seedy area of town and are going to an equally (or more) dangerous area by taking the bus or train, then no--it's probably not safe.
I went out all the time at night as a child. I grew up in the sticks during the 70s and 80s--before it became unsafe to play outside in the middle of the day in broad daylight! That was the life, you know? Nowadays you can't even put your child in a fenced in, gated, locked back yard for fear of him being kidnapped!

I think the safety of public transporation is largely dependent on where you live. Certainly there are some areas of Seattle where I wouldn't feel safe, but for the most part, Seattle and the Puget Sound area is safe. I didn't go out a lot at night, but then I grew up in Waco, Texas, so there weren't very many places to go TO ;-)

I used public transportation as a means of travel before getting my liscence. I don't recall being allowed out of the yard when i was a kid let alone going on a bus somewhere. as a teenager i used the bus and vancouvers' sky train alot to go to different events. There were times when i didnt feel safe like at 1 a.m. and i was by myself but i got over it and thankfully nothing ever happened to me.
