i agree-your brother gave the car away, the neighbor doesn't owe him anything. if it's really bothering him, have him write it off on taxes.
'nough said!

No, the neighbor should NOT give back the car or offer to pay for it. What did your brother expect them to do with it? Keep it around as a lawn ornament? He GAVE it to them, the transaction is done. Too bad for your brother that the neighbor is a better mechanic (or has a better one)!

I would say the neighbor keeps it. Your brother gave it to the neighbor obviously because he did not want to take the time to fix it. If it was given away I would say your brother should no longer have an interest in it and whether it runs or not.

well... sounds like your brother was not too concerned with the car or he would not have given it away. he would have gotten it fixed. now the neighbor has a car that works... your brother will be repaid with blessings ... but no he should not receive the car or money from the neighbor... a gift is a gift is a gift

It would be nice if the neighbor offered to compensate your brother. But there is no obligation.
Your brother gave the car away. He must live with the consequences. Ignorance is not bliss. Life is not always fair. He must learn from his mistakes and move on.

No. They should not give it back. Your brother should have taken it to be fixed. If it was just a minor thing or not, a gift is a gift. Would you feel the same way if it was your brother that had been given the car?

No the neighbor should not give it back. That would be just plain silly. That's like people who throw away computers and then someone dumpster dives and fixes the computer.

no. its just plain rude.
i was reading the bio of bruce cambell and he was talking about how he bought this horrid car that was painted with house paint, and they put sooo much money into it trying to get it to work for 10 miles, well they gave it away to a lady in their church and hoped for the best. well for her it never ran better. perhaps your brother giving the car away was someone Else's divine plan to help someone out. he might even get something better back anyway.
it seems to me he had the 2 year old syndrome. didn't want it then, but now that you have it and its working for you i want it.

Sorry to say, but your brother gave it away. He should have taken the time to find out what was wrong with it. Since he didn't, and chose to just give it away, that's his fault. It belongs to the neighbor, free and clear.

A gift is a gift. If the neighbor had wound up having to pay to have it hauled off, would you expect to have your brother split the bill?

Whomever has the title is the owner, and it sounds like that's the neighbor. It doesn't matter what we think the neighbor should do, he's not the one asking for our advice.
