As stated previously, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Diana and numerous other humanitarians come to mind. But I cannot help feel that there are countless less "famous" persons that give/gave tremendoulsy to the world -- more so than they get/got in return.

For example:
> The nurses and nursing assistants that work long hours taking care of the sick, dying, and elderly in ill-equipped nursing homes -- often times at wages that are very low.

> The fire fighters that risk their lives to rescue people everday. Many of these people volunteer at the fire department.

> The teacher that puts up with overcrowded schools, which are filled with violence. These same educators get very little respect and even less money to do their job.

> The janitor that comes in and mops up the blood, dirt, puke, and spilled drinks off the floor in the hospital so as not to cause an unnecessary disaster.

> The doctors, scientists, chemists, and students who spend hours researching and developing cures for diseases. Sure they may get paid well, but in the grand scheme of things, they get far less that what their dedication and intelligence provides to the world.

> The first people to contract HIV back in the early 80's endured countless pills, transfusions, ignorance, bigotry, medicinal trials (and errors) and even death so that today's infected can live with HIV with relative comfort compared to what these pioneers had to endure. Their experiences have taught our generation of scientists and doctors much.

Honestly, I can think of an endless amount of "non-famous" persons that give or have given more to the world than what they receive.

For me though, Ryan White stands out in my mind. That young child endured, struggled, suffered, and eventually died a hero in my mind. Anyone who works in the HIV service industry (such as myself) knows the importance of this little boy's life-legacy.

That's a lot of ambition you have there!!!

I doubt if we even know about the best human beings there has ever been...I suspect they died without acknowledgement.

So I'm going to say...every person who was scared to do something...but did it anyway, because another human being benefitted. They are heroes...forget the biggest muscles and the loudest voices....these people are the REAL heroes.

I have known many. They gave everything they had in one way or another. It's funny but right now I can't even remember a name. But that's probably the way they would want it.

I know/have known a very few. They're invariably women and I think it's due to "maternal instincts".
