We got an "open house" invitation for my husband's cousin's kid's high school graduation. They live 2 states away, see them 1-3 times a year. We aren't going to the open house. I don't know what is appropriate to send as far as a gift. I was thinking $25 was a nice gesture. There's tons of cousins...and kids, so this will set the precedence for the other kids that will follow. Ideas??!?!?

A gift of $25 is a generous gesture. Yes, you are setting a precedent.

Graduation announcements should not be viewed as an invitation to send a gift to the graduate. Unless you are really close or are going to the party or open house, I would not feel obligated to send anything other than a card or letter of congratulations.

However, it is your choice.

I have the same issue going on in my family right now! I was thinking about giving a gift card to Target so that the gift might really be used for something for her dorm room next year. I know if I give cash it will probably be used on gas or some other everyday expense.

Yes, I think $25 is a very nice gesture!

if this kid is going to college or living on their own, try a gift certificate to a store like bed bath and beyond or even walmart or any sort of supermarket (even if the kid will have a meal plan, there's nothing like a little easy mac at two in the morning)

I think $20 or $25 is perfect.
or maybe get them a set of tools for their car
or a book on living on your own for youhg adults (they sell tons of them at borders)
