if the cough were severe I would ask if the cougher were alright, otherwise I would tend to ignore it.

* if it was my 5 year old daughter and she didn't put her hand in front of her mouth when she coughed, I would remind her to do this next time and explain about germs (coughs and sneezes spread diseases!)

* if it was someone I wasn't familiar with, I wouldn't draw attention to it and wouldn't potentially embarrass them by letting them know I had noticed - unless of course it was a coughing fit and then I would fetch a glass of water and ask if they were okay!

* if it was some idiot sitting behind me on the bus coughing their lungs up in that awful green sputum sort of way, right down the back of my neck, I would perhaps turn around and ask them politely to please put their hand over their mouth. (on the other hand, I am British so I am more likely to stiffen my top lip and move seats away from them . . ..)

Maybe I don't understand the question properly - are you asking if there is something similar to 'Bless You' when someone sneezes, for when someone coughs??

There was a man on the plane that kept coughing. He was right across the isle from where I sat. I asked him if he was all right, then asked if he needed a tissue, after two "No's", I then asked him if he would please cover his mouth when he coughed. What was he going to say? It worked.

When someone is coughing, you should ask the person if they are okay. That is the polite thing, and bless you is for sneezing.

People don't usually say anything. If it's a chronic cough, they might ask the person if he or she is o.k., but never "Excuse you". That would be rude.

I don't think you say anything...haha. maybe an "are you okay?". but definitely not "excuse you" or "bless you" unless you thought it was a sneeze.
