How old does a child have to be before they could possibly understand the concept of reading?

I've noticed the amount of questions about spanking being asked (this is yet one more!). It seems like a huge contraversy. I don't think it should be. I think there is more than one way to raise children, and all different kinds of people have gone through all different kinds of discipline and most turn out fine. I don't think it's whether or not a parent spanks, but how they treat their kids. Sure, parents can spank abusively, but they can ground abusively too. The only solution to avoid any abuse is "no discipline" and I can count on one hand all the parents supporting that style. I spank my kids, I know people who do not, and I think we are both equally good parents.

Did you feel bad and cut it down after you had time to think about it.

You're getting ready to go to the grocery store and ask your kids (boy-4 and girl-6) to put their jackets and stuff on. When you get to the store, the boy takes off his jacket in the cart and is wearing a bright neon pink sweater with flowers all over it. He obviously put it on when he put his jacket on and most likley belongs to the sister. Would you ask him to take it off? Make him take it off and actually pull it off of him and put his jacket back on him if he wasn't wearing anything under it? Or would you go about your buisness because after all, it's just a sweater?

Btw, this isn't about me. I saw a lady freaking out today at the store. I made up the first part of the story assuming that, that's how it went down before she freaked out.

To decide what time to come home?

Im 18 and a girl and right now its x-mas break and I don't go back to school till the 3rd, don't you think Im old enough to decide if I should be able to stay out later with my friends who are 18 and 23 instead of rushing home around 12 or 12:30?
My friend who is 23 and a guy works at a radio station from 7 till 11:40 or 12 and we hang out with him there, sometimes he and my other friend who is also a guy go back to his apt and chill, watch tv and attempt to make food, I got to hang out with them late once but Im always the one to have to go home.
Wouldn't it make more since to hang out with them till about 1 or 130, the latest 2, which is the latest everyone goes home, instead if sitting at home miserable ?
I dont plan on doing this when I have school or every single friday, just when everyone hangs out after my friend gets off work. We usually go hang out at work with him and then go get food and go hang out at his place and he only lives 5 minutes away from me.

Since it is break, my mom and bro haven't been going to bed early and are typically up pretty late so its not like I would waking them up coming in.
My mom wants me home around 12 or 12:30, so Im home and she doesn't have to worry about me. I know she cares about me but its time to let go a little. I rather be with my friends than at home wishing I could be with them.

I know just sitting around watching tv and eating doesn't sound like that much fun, but these guys are my closest friends and time spent doing anything with them is fun. We don't drink over there, atleast not me and the other 18 year old and I don't have to worry about them taking advantage of me. The 23 year old respects women and Im just friends with the 18 year old.

So if my mom knows where ill be, who ill be with and till when, why can't I hang out with them later?

Tonight we were talking with friends about the differences in being a child today, than 20 - 30 or more years ago.

I was allowed to come home from school alone at 9 yrs. old. We were always outside and our parents were almost never with us. We were always playing near a creek and pond. We didn't have computers or video games to entertain us, yet we were always busy and rarely in trouble (we were far from perfect, but were never in serious trouble).

What did you do that you wouldn't let your own children do?

What do babies have on their minds?

2007-12-30 13:44:49 · 14 answers · asked by Palvi 1

My ex and I have a baby. He abandoned me when I was 6 1/2 mos preggo. He's come around from time to time but has offered no support. His parents still do not know about the baby. They recently opened a restaurant and are all very involved. I have given him multiple chances to contribute (time or money) and he has not. I have paid for everything and have no family here. I called him the other night and told him I was taking him to court. He came over the next day and said he was broke and needed 2 years, that he wanted to be there for the baby but has no money. I want to give him a choice. Either tell his parents and help me out a few hours a week, or I file the paperwork and his parents can find out that way, plus be responsible for payments. It's not about the money, however, I have had to find a new job (with less pay) and plus daycare is expensive. I think 2 years is a little too much to ask, b/c what happens after 2 years? What would you do?

My 6 year old has been referred to see a mental health doctor to see if he has OCD. It's especially worse at meal times, he has to drink with a straw as he worries about getting germs from the cup, there are only one or twn types of cutlery he will use as he believes most of them have germs on them, his food can't be touching on the plate as this makes the food contaminate each other and he won't eat it, he also won't wear clothes that are red as he says they have germs on them, there are also other things. Am I over reacting taking him to the doctors, could it be a normal child phase or is it best to have it checked out. Anyone with similar exp would be great, thanks in advance, x

... get them up again so that they can "see the New Year in" even though they may be tired and there will be alcohol around.
I always put my boys to bed at their usual time and told them that they would wake up to a New Year so they needed to sleep well in order to get ready for it! I always crept up and gave them a New Year kiss at midnight though while they were sleeping.
What do you do as regards young children at New Year?
When all of mine got to be teenagers they were allowed to stay up just for that one night if they wanted to but normally their routine meant that they went off to bed anyhow as they were healthily tired!

Or did you agree to have children because your wife wanted children?

I am curious because too many of my husband's buddies admitted they never wanted children! They are jealous of my husband. They say he's "lucky" because he has no kids!

if you had a choice between being grounded or some other punishment, did you choose a spanking? Did you do it because you thought it would be over quicker etc?

Also, have you every offered yourself for a spanking, without being asked, because you felt you needed to be punished?

My boyfriend of 2 years is a registered sex offender, not a pedophile, and i have a 3 year old child. we are thinking of getting married and he wants to "adopt" my child. my baby daddy says if that's the case he can take my daughter away for my boyfriend being a sex offender. My boyfriend was convicted for raping a 26 year old woman,(he was 21) with NO evidence what so ever except for her words against his, so instead of a BIG trial he took a plea bargone. it was such a BS situation that he didn't even spend a night in jail, but still has to register. I love him to death but i don't want to lose my daughter. can anyone help?

i dont think so-you should just take away their privileges.what sense does it make to hit them even if they did nothing wrong? i mean just because you got hit as a child doesnt mean your child should-thats not fair at all.just because their your kids doesnt mean you can put your hands on them like that-but i guess it depends on the situation.im not tyring to insult anyone but its not good to hit kids.i dont see how a parent could hit their children in public eiether.i dont whats wrong with takin away stuff they like?

Yesterday my 11 year old daughter Judith had her friend Denise, who is the same age, over to play and it was decided that she could sleep at our house. In late afternoon, the girls started to tease Judith's little sister (7), taking her toys away and making fun of her. The little girl came to me crying, twice (she is not whiny normally). I banned the older girls to Judith's room and they got no desert at dinner. When it was sleeping time for them, they kept giggling, running around and making noise. I had to go in there three times and tell them to finally go sleep. The third time, Judith said to me an equivalent of "shut up" in our language. I was so furious, and I told the girls I would deal with them in the morning. To top it off, when I went to sleep I found out that they had played around with my makeup stuff, using my lipstick etc. (must have happened while I was taking my husband to the airport).
What would you do with these girls? It's still morning here.

...yet they are quick to point out the wrong doing of other people's?

Example: One child is a compulsive liar. Now, this person was doing a Bachelor degree at Uni. Why would they supposedly go for 3 years and not do the final week at school and take the exams? Her excuse was: Oh, I decided it wasn't for me. Wouldn't a normal person go that last week just to get the piece of paper? My theory is with the busy social life this person had (and the fact that rarely attended lectures) she wasn't really going to school...
EXAMPLE 2: This person has got at least 8 wisdom teeth out! Her mum keeps giving her money. Only sharks keep growing teeth like that!
And if I told you the huge whoppers they told, you'd never believe me!
FINAL COMMENT: This type of lying is a regular thing for this person. Everyone knows it but dear old mum. When dear old mum was presented with cold hard evidence on two occassions, she shot the messeger and sided with the liar.
