I read an article this morning on CNN.com regarding a little girl that had started menstruating at 4 years, in this case it was a thyroid problem causing it.

This raised a question that I've discussed with family in the past. It seems that kids are maturing physically at a much younger age than when I was a kid (now 35). What's causing it?

I've heard some say it's the hormones they give the cows to produce milk, livestock to grow larger. Is it the culture and overt sexuality sending signals to the brain and body at a younger age?

What do you think folks?

How much of an allowance do you give your teenager? How about chores? I'm just wondering what would work best, a given amount? OR a list of chores with a $ amount attached to each one?

We have a good size home, 4 cats and 1 dog (if this helps).

Suggestions?

I was with my ex for 6 months and we were living together, and he never helped with the bills or anything. He started to be very controlling, possesive and even accusing me of cheating on him. He has mental problems, and would "change" personalities, and I would be fearful of him. I realized this was emotional abuse and got out. Unfortunately, not soon enough, as I am 8 months pregnant with his baby. I want nothing to do with him. I want to protect my child from ever knowing her real father. I have my parents' support, but it is a little daunting to know that I will be supporting this child on my own. Most people I talk to say to get him for child support, but I am worried that will entitle him to be apart of her life. I know he has legal rights as a father, and I have consulted a lawyer, but I'm still in a pickle as to what to do. Does anybody else have a similar experience?

I never ever said anything disparaging against any other religion, and I never would. And I never mentioned Satan. Maybe YOU should read more closely. I do not at all get freaked out by people who aren't my religion. My brother is an athiest, my other brother is converting to some Indian religion of his wife (I can't pronouce it), and my husband is hard-core Catholic. Our son speaks openly with all of them, and I am so happy for that because it makes him a more interesting, informed individual. I was questioning why people feel the need to SINGLE OUT Chrisitanity as bad. Why didn't you mention the other prominant religions? It's always Chrisitanity taking the hit. That is my point - NOT that you should raise your kid Chrisitian, NOT that shouldn't shouldn't beleive what you beleive, NOT that I want to convert you to Christianity. And for people who don't think Islam gets taught in schools - open up your kids World History book.

Personally, I feel sex is for married couples, but I know that is just my opinion. At the very least, sex should be between adults in a commited relationship. It saddens me to see how many 13 and 14 year olds are out there having sex - and end up getting pregnant. Just wondering what you're going to be telling your kids. Thanks!

I don't get it. There are so many parents who don't want to "push" Chrisitanity on their child. They let every other religion be a part of their child's life, but anything Chrisitian they feel they need to guard against, for fear they are pushing it. (Schools are the same way - they celebrate Kwanza, teach the principles of Islam in history class, celebrate religous diversity, etc. But mention Christianity and it's a no-no. I am happy for the diversity in schools, but why can't Chrisitianity be just another one of the diverse beleifs?) Why do these parents feel it is wrong to teach their kids Chrisitianity? Why can't you teach Chrisitanity but ALSO teach them that as they learn about the world they may want to explore something else. What is wrong with that? Why is Chrisitianity the only religion in the world that is OK to bash right now?

And, no, I didn't really ask a question, I just had to get that out in response to the "wicca baby's room" question.

My husband says he wants kids but yet he makes smart remarks about how aggravating they are & how much money they take. He is confusing me so I'm not sure if he wants kids or not. Sometimes he says that he would love to have one right now & that it probably wouldn't be bad to be a daddy but then at other times he is making those negative remarks & acting like he doesn't. Is he just nervous & scared about becoming a father? Why would he say that he does but then turn around & act like he doesn't want one. Money shouldn't be a problem because we both make really good money. I've been ready for about a year now but I'm waiting on him. Did anyone else experience this? HELP!

Last Christmas, My in law family went down to N.Carolina and I was pregnant with my daughter and my son was 14 months. My mother in law made a comment to my husband, ( which she isn't his real mother she passed on) and he was very upset and left. I stayed and I heard all of families negative comments. When my husband returned I told him what they said and then they backfired on me, saying "why don't you just talk to Katrina since she will tell Travis everything", and I said "Of course I will, he is my husband!" I felt violated with the whole family staring at me. That put a rift in the tides and every since that they have apologized for being stuck up to us. Is she just trying to be nice to us because she wants to see the Grandkids? We have lunch together sometimes and it lasts for 30mins and then she splits and she never really is into my conversations. I know I probably already answered my question, but I need to hear it from someone else. Tell me I am crazy or not.

My 10 year old still seems to - but I think that's more because he wants to rather than actually does.

(PS: Anyone who wants to tell me its a disgrace to lie to children about this blah blah blah - fine, but I disagree).

I'm Hispanic and when I was a child my parents sometimes punished us by make us kneel in rice, sometimes for up to an hour. My brothers hurt me once to the point I had to go to the hospital. As punishment they were spanked, made to kneel in hard uncooked rice and write 500 times "I will not hurt my little sister" This (the rice and sometimes corn kneeling) is a common punishment in some hispanic families. Has anyone else had this or something simular done or do this with thier children?

I have heard on the net that some parents in the UK make their children wear dress clothes or their school uniform after school and some even on weekends. I’ve heard things like "my parents make me wear my uniform until I go to bed" or "I have to wear my uniform on weekends too" Some have claimed being made to wear a tie, dress shoes and even a blazer all the time. Is this true or are these people just making it up.
