I'm Hispanic and when I was a child my parents sometimes punished us by make us kneel in rice, sometimes for up to an hour. My brothers hurt me once to the point I had to go to the hospital. As punishment they were spanked, made to kneel in hard uncooked rice and write 500 times "I will not hurt my little sister" This (the rice and sometimes corn kneeling) is a common punishment in some hispanic families. Has anyone else had this or something simular done or do this with thier children?

I, too, had to kneel on rice, and just kneeling in general was common punishment at school when it was the 1960s. I used the kneeling thing (on carpet, though) for my son about when he was seven, and he still remembers it. Only did it once, and it worked.

It's a very old form of corporal punishment. It was used quite a bit in Catholic households. Corporal punishment = any punishment of the body and it includes having to maintain any awkward or uncomfortable position such as kneeling, standing in the corner, holding weight, etc. Glad to here there are still some creative thinking parents.

Ouch. My mother chased my sisters and I round the house swinging one of my father's old belts. We soon realized that if we locked ourselves in the bathroom she would calm down and not kill us. But she was Scottish and not Hispanic so we didn't have rice only porridge and that wouldn't work as well!

Its better to kneel on rice than to be beaten senseless. Its not child abuse more of a variation to standing in the corner.

Doesn't sound too harsh to me.
I think that if more parents were a little tougher on their kids our society wouldn't be so out of whack. I am in no way saying that child abuse is ok. But I don't think that this is child abuse.
Good Luck

That's brilliant! Parents need to be creative with their punishment reward system.

Why does everyone think that anything other than time out is child abuse?

I have heard of this type of child abuse and no I would never torture or hurt my children in this way. Its just to cruel a punishment.
