I am not sure specifically. I have talked with many elders. The days back, especially in depression days...times were hard. If you had meat for a meal, it was often a treat. They had little. Everyone was poor. When the depression hit, many wealthy people lost all of their money and lifestyle. Those wealthy ones who may have had meat houses, lost them. If you do bad then you loose your rewards. If you do good, you gain rewards. Many elderly people...our grandmas and grandpas had a close walk with God. They understood the way life works. The talked to us in parables, like Christ did. It was to make us think, and discover the meaning of life. If we come up with the understanding by listening, learning, soul searching etc then it will have more meaning. It is very similar to reaping what you sow.
