How can we teach young girls to be confident without needing constant affirmation about their looks?

I see countless questions on this forum posted by young girls asking "Am I pretty?" and posting pictures of themselves. Aside from the fact that it's not a good idea for kids to post pictures of themselves on the internet, why do our American girls need such constant affirmation that they look attractive?

I've noticed this ever since elementary school. Girls that say things like: "I'm so ugly," or "I'm so fat," just so that people will protest: "No! You're very pretty!"

How can we teach young women to be satisfied with the way they look?

i am having sharp pains in my stomach like every 20-30 mins. I think that they are braxton hicks contractions. Should i go to the hospital? I am 36 weeks and will be 37 weeks on tuesday.

He's turning 4, has so many toys and doesn't play with half of them so I don't really want to get him more toys. I was thinking of a tent for a his bed (he had a box on his bed once and I was going to take it for betime but he wanted to sleep in it). I was also thinking about a comfy chair for his room or the living room. Do you think books are boring? Any suggestions except for toys unless they're cool but not too expensive (around $40 or less)

We put our 21 month old in a twin size bed on Monday and he slept like an angel every night until last night. Now it's a fight to get him to stay in his room, he cries at the door and won't stop. We let him stay up with us last night but it's happening again. Do you think we should bring the crib back into his room? He use to sleep 2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon for naps and now is only getting 1 nap for about 2 hours or a little more in the afternoon because he doesn't want to stay in his bed, he wants to play during the day. I don't know if he is over tired? We are trying to adjust him to a big-boy bed before the baby comes in January but should we bring the crib back if he's so upset? Thanks for any advice.

my 17 month old refuses to eat any thing from 10 days i toke him to his doctor and she told me that it is normal in this age. and she suggest to give him pediasure mixed with milk he just drink 3 bottels of milk a day from 6 days he is teething also and it might be the reason but he was teething before and he quit eating for only 1 to2 days this time it took long time 10 days wihout any solid food and if he eat either one single bit and that it that day he eat home made pizza and directly vomitted.
i am also having problem to make him sleep and weak up early he sleeps around midnight and weak up at 15:00.
and he is my first son he also get used to sleep with me in the same bed and the worse thing that he will weak up if i am not next to him me or his dad. now i have a 3 month old boy who sleeps by him self i am planning to prepear for them their own bed room in a period of one month . it is easy for my second son to sleep there but what to do with my elder son

I had sex in Aug. and thought I was careful got my period in Sept. right on schedule! Have not had sex sice but am 9 days late this month and thought well just to be sure i'd take a test. It's got one dark line and the other is very light. could I be pregnant?

my sister is pregnant and she has this one stretch mark on her belly that is really pink and burns and she is putting cocoa butter on it but its not helping...she keeps rubbing it with her hand because it makes it feel better...is there anything that yall would use for stretchmarks aside from cocoa butter?

I have a HUGE crush on this kid. I can't stop thinking about him, and he doesn't even notice. He practically looks right through. I commented him a few times on myspace, but he didn't answer me. can't help but thinking that I'm not good enough for him. What should I do?

One of my best friends told me that she had cylamedia. She said that she thinks she got it from her ex boyfriend. Her current boyfriend of 2years also got it but he forgave her for cheating. They have been trying to have a baby and no success. Could her having the clamedia have hurt there chances in becoming pregnant?

I'm 30 and was lucky enough to have parents that gave me lots of opportunities so that I could be successful, but there were still lots of times when I almost ruined things (when I was a teenager etc.). Obviously most parents try to give their kids lots of opportunties and have high expectations of them, but I think this is more prevalent in the Asian culture (we are Asian). Also, my Mom, despite having been a Psychology professor when she was younger, was a home-maker when we were kids, raising us and running my Dad's business. I am already 30 and make a lot more money than my husband - as in - we basically live solely on my income as his is minimal..... so I think I'll never be able to have kids.... and give them the kind of life and commitment that my parents gave me... and when I see so many of my friends (that I know make way more than their husband/boyfriends but still less than I make) or just other women out and about that look really really young, I just wonder...

Everyone that asks me how far along I am always ends up telling me "oh my God, you're so small, I thought you were around your 3rd month." I hear it so much that now I'm so worried and scared. Because I'm so small, is my baby going to be small too? Of course, we all want a healthy baby...but now I can't stop thinking about it's height and weight. I eat right...I've been gaining weight. I gained 20 lbs. ever since I've been pregnant; however, how will my baby be? Please help me! Thank you.

I had my daughter 6 weeks ago. I have not yet resumed my period, but I have had cramping and blood tinged discharge for 3 days now. I am worried that something is wrong, or is this normal? I have resumed having sex, and am using condoms. I also started Ortho Tri Cyclen birth control 2 weeks ago if that helps.

My husband and I have ben trying to get preg. We did and I lost the baby on Sept.11. (i was 6 weeks) I havent gotten my period yet, but these last few days iv felt Preg. I also had some spotting yesterday in the morning ( then it went away) Then again today. Im tinking it could be implatation(sp?) and soure boobs. But can I be preg this soon, and with no period.

He wears underwear all day and will ask for a diaper when he knows he has to go. He will not go unless he has a diaper on... even if it means holding it for hours. I try and try to make potty training fun and a pleasant experience but I am at the end of my wits! He is just being stubborn!
