I've been discussing the smoking issue, but have a couple of business owners claiming that the government is taking away their rights. They believe that the government should not pass nor enforce anti-smoking laws, but I'm curious to find out if it was ever illegal to ban smoking from any businesses at all. I'm especially wondering about restaurants, clothing stores (where merchandise could be ruined by smoke and it could be a real fire hazard), schools (by teachers), or anyplace.

So, in your area, was it ever illegal to ban smoking from anyplace? Please ask your parents, and especially your grandparents or older neighbors who might know.

There are a few points I am about to make to them (on a group, not here), comparing the smoking issue to some other issues,
but I want to see if anyone here comes up with my same thoughts before I post it to them.

Thank you in advance for participating.

why in the state of Tennessee is it not considered child abuse or neglect when a mother lets her children go with lice for almost four years now? I just can't see how this is not considered child neglect in the eyes of the court system. Just curious of everyone thoughts on this?

We split in Sept. He moved out in Dec. We have joint mortgage and he pays nothing toward anything, he refuses 2 sell as we will have to pay penalties for selling early. Everything comes out of my account and I am really struggling at the moment. I worry that when house is sold in future he will be entitled to half even though I haven't received a penny from him. I dont think this is fair. I mentioned transferring mortgage into my name as he says he wants out but there is a £260 administration fee which he is refusing to pay half of and I cant afford it on my own. We only bought the house July but things went drastically wrong between us. Does anyone have any advice.

i caught a really bad sore throat friday morning. it got worse over the weekend. called in sick monday to go to the doctor and was diagnosed with strep. i felt better yesterday after my 2nd day of antibiotics and went with my fiance and son to the mall for maybe 30 minutes. while there, i spotted the head boss from my work but she didnt see me. well, thanks to not resting yesterday i feel like crap today and had to call in. we have been advised that thanks to HIPAA we dont have to state a reason why we are calling in sick so i didnt. also, i still have plenty of sick time in my bank. question is, if she did see me out does she have any leg to stand on? she isnt at my house right now and cant prove that my throat isnt still killing me. i work for a major medical insurance company in customer service and am on the phones 90% of the day which isnt great for a sore throat. thoughts?

i am pregnant(just found out yesterday, and i assume i am about 7 weeks). My position is material controls for an automotive parts supplier. I ship and recieve, using a walk behind high-lo. I also do inventory control and most office duties. i think being pregnant will effect my ability to use the high-lo, other wise I can do everything else. this is a SMALL company. just me and the general manager, so there is nobody else to do my job when I take maturnity leave.

If any one knows the laws on this I would appreciate some advice...thanks

I was working for a prominent attorney in my local area when due to an illness I was required to have surgery. My employer asked that I sign a voluntary release of position. I did not want to say that I quit, so I refused to sign. FMLA does not apply to my previous employer due to not having 50+ employees for the company. My position was held open and upon my release from the doctor, I contacted both my employer and the office supervisor. My call was never returned. I went in to work at my normal scheduled time and was given my personal effects and another person was brought in on the same day I returned. I had a form that needed to be filled out by my previous employer to help me support my family (I am a single mother of 3) while being unemployed and she has refused. She has said I could use her as a reference but somehow I feel that she would not give me a good reference. Legally, what rights do I have as protection for such behaviors while working in an at Will State?
